Split ends don’t travel up your hair. You will hear this constantly “if you don’t cut your split ends, they will travel up the hair.” It is one of the most repeated pieces of haircare advice out there, and it is simply not accurate. Here is what actually happens. Your hair is damaged. Damaged hair splits. It doesn’t matter where you cut, the compromised hair above was always going to split anyway. Whether you cut or didn’t cut is almost irrelevant. The damage is the problem. Not the cutting. If your hair is damaged and you don’t repair it, it will keep splitting. Always. A trim removes what you can see. It does not change the condition of what’s left behind. So the splits come back, not because they travelled up, but because the damaged hair above was never addressed. After working with hair for over 35 years, the clients who actually break the split end cycle are the ones who shift their focus from cutting to repairing. You DO NOT have to cut your hair short to make it healthy. If you want to keep your long hair, you can and should. Never let anyone manipulate you into cutting more than you’re comfortable with. It’s your hair. It’s your body. You own it, so act like it and take charge. Solution: Low porosity hair: use an amino acid treatment weekly, then switch to intense hydration treatments. Continue rotating. Normal or Healthy High Porosity: traditional protein treatments.
