Can we talk about these marathon speeds for a second? 🤯 I wanted to show you what those marathon goal times actually look like in real-time on a treadmill. ⏱️ 2-Hour Marathon: 4:34/mile (13.1 MPH) – This felt like a full-on sprint! ⏱️ 3-Hour Marathon: 6:52/mile (8.7 MPH) – Still a very solid, fast pace. ⏱️ 4-Hour Marathon: 9:09/mile (6.6 MPH). - My sweet spot! ⏱️ 5-Hour Marathon: 11:27/mile (5.2 MPH). If you can run a 5k without stopping, you can run a marathon 👀🏃🏻♂️ I know this sounds completely mental but honestly it's true - the gap between 5k and a marathon is smaller than you think. I went from barely running 5k to finishing a marathon in 6 months and I'm not special. 1️⃣ The difference isn't physical ability, it's training adaptation. If you can run 5k non-stop, you've already proven your cardiovascular system works and your legs can handle repetitive impact. The truth is everything else is just gradually building on that foundation. 2️⃣ Marathon training is just progressive overload over 12-16 weeks. Week 1 you might run 4 times for 25km total. Week 16 you're running 4 times for 55km total with a 30km long run. The reality is each week only adds a tiny bit more stress than the last. 3️⃣ You don't need to be fast, you just need to be consistent. A 5 hour marathon is still a marathon. The truth is most people can walk-run a marathon with proper training regardless of their current pace. 4️⃣ The long run builds up slower than you think. You don't jump from 5k to 30k overnight. Week 1 long run might be 8km. Week 4 it's 12km. Week 8 it's 18km. Your body will have months to adapt. 5️⃣ Mental toughness develops through the training process. The hard part isn't race day - it's getting out the door 4 times a week for 16 weeks straight. The truth is if you have the discipline to follow a training plan consistently, the marathon itself is just the celebration of all that work. 6️⃣ Your body is more capable than your brain thinks. The 5k runner who thinks marathons are impossible is just operating from fear and self-doubt. The reality is humans are literally built for endurance running. 7️⃣ The key? Respect the distance but don't fear it. Train properly, build gradually, fuel correctly, and listen to your body. The truth is thousands of people go from 5k to marathon every year. If this is your year, here are 10 things I wish someone had told me before my first marathon ⬇️ 1️⃣ Training doesn’t have to be perfect, consistency beats the odd missed run. 2️⃣ The long runs really matter. They build confidence, resilience, and teach your body how to keep going. Your legs need those miles. My longest was 32km pre race day. 3️⃣ Your body will feel things you’ve never felt before, not every ache is an injury but every ache is one to listen to & a few rest days will be worth it to prevent it becoming an injury. 4️⃣ Don’t put pressure on yourself for a finish time. Your first marathon is about finishing, not proving anything. Enjoy it! 5️⃣ Fuel earlier than you think you need to, practice it in training. Also have a good understanding of fuelling stations along the route. Know your game plan! I trialled about 6 different gel brands before I found one I could stomach. 6️⃣ Taper week will mess with your head. Phantom pains are real and usually harmless. I had so many (went to physio twice that week) 🙈 7️⃣ You’ll be way more sore after than you expect, stairs will hurt and your appetite might feel all over the place. Totally normal. My appetite didn’t build again for a few days after. 8️⃣ Race day adrenaline is powerful, start slower than you want to. Trust me! Know the pace you are aiming for & save your splits as your wallpaper or write it on your arm (incase GPS is wrong - most are off slightly). 9️⃣ Walking breaks and plan changes are allowed. You still earn the medal. 🥇 🔟 Crossing the finish line will change how you see yourself for the rest of your life and that confidence lasts. If you’re running your first marathon this year, I’m so proud of you already 💛 I ran my first two marathons last year. This one was my very first in Chicago!! 3.53, afterwards I ran Amsterdam in 4.07 💫 Save this for the hard training days and trust the process 🏁 #running #marathon #advice
