A python was found inside a household closet after entering the home in pursuit of prey. In parts of Australia, snakes regularly move through suburban and urban areas, especially when food sources such as possums are present. Enclosed indoor spaces can provide warmth, cover, and a temporary sense of security for a hunting snake. Australia’s native wildlife often overlaps with human environments. Pythons are non venomous constrictors that follow scent trails and movement, not buildings or property lines. When prey enters roof cavities or wall spaces, snakes may follow without distinction between indoor and outdoor territory. After feeding, the snake was safely removed by professionals and relocated to nearby bushland. This approach reduces risk to residents while allowing the animal to continue its natural behavior elsewhere. Situations like this highlight how wildlife movement is driven by opportunity rather than intent, even in highly developed areas.

Monty the Reticulated Python (Malayopython reticulatus) out and about after a difficult shed. This species holds the record for the longest snake species in the world 10m, where the Green Anaconda (Eunectes murinus) is the heaviest. It is amazing how tolerant snakes really are but yet we give them this bad wrap. You can see how he shrugs me off where he could easily rip massive wounds into me. The only thing they want to bite is prey. It is often said that venomous snakes dont want to bite to save venom. Venom is made up of proteins and enzymes from the adapted salivary gland (venom gland). It is not that precision to them and will take some energy to make but not massive amounts. The snake would have to be in very poor shape if producing venom was going to be an issue. Snakes can also deliver dry bites so they can bite and save venom anyway. I have had some spitting cobras spit 15 times before running dry, so why not just kill the human and eat buffet after. Yes, they have extraordinary large/long venom glands, but they dont hold the record. Snakes just dont want to bite and give plenty of warnings if you know the signs. Accidents do happen, but many times, people messing with snakes is the issue. Remember, snakes have venom primarily for catching prey, but it can work as a brilliant defense, especially for the spitting cobras. #reticulatedpython #malayopythonrericulatus #reticsofinstagram #python #record #snake
