Quantum computing explained 👾 If it does as it promises, it will change the world. Quantum computing is a new type of computing that uses qubits, which can represent more than just 0 or 1, to tackle certain problems in very different ways than normal computers do. Its biggest promise is in areas like materials science, drug discovery, optimization, and cryptography, where it could eventually do useful work beyond classical machines. Like AI was, it’s the kind of thing that could explode and change our lives. Follow for more informal, non patronising tech explainers [quantum computing]

What is Quantum Computing? 🧠⚛️ PhD students Tim Newman and Rebecca Radebold explain how this powerful tech works, from shining lasers on tiny crystals to correcting quantum errors. Quantum computers could one day transform drug discovery and secure communication, with research advancing at the Sydney Nanoscience Hub. #USYD #QuantumComputing #PhDLife #FutureTech

Microsoft just made a massive breakthrough that will change technology forever. It’s called the Majorana 1, a quantum chip that’s the first of its kind in quantum computing. And what this thing can do is absolutely insane. Imagine a world where you could invent concrete that could heal itself. Or you could design a phone battery that could be charged one time, and then never run out of juice. That sounds like science fiction, but it’s not. This chip is gonna make it possible with quantum computing. Here’s how quantum computing works (ELI5). Imagine the process to invent the material for an infinite battery was actually a giant maze. If you solve the maze, you invent the formula for a new battery technology. A normal computer would have to try every single pathway in the maze, one at a time. And it could take centuries to find the right path all the way through. But a quantum computer works differently, because it can try every single path in the maze at the same time. This is essentially the difference between a bit and a qubit (the quantum bits that power quantum computers) Now this new Majorana chip has an architecture that can sustain up to 1 million qubits at the same time. That’s 1 million different pathways through the maze, every moment, until it’s solved. And what this means, is pretty incredible. When a scientist goes into a lab to create a material or a design new drug, they won’t need to run experiments. Because this chip will just give them the right answer the very first time. And It’s hard to wrap your head around what this means, but essentially, it’s new medicines, new iPhone screens that can never crack, new metals for planes that fly at supersonic speeds. Everything will change because of quantum computers. And we just entered the Quantum Era. Google’s quantum computer did something that would take our fastest supercomputers 10 SEPTILLION years... in just five minutes! Let me break down how that’s even possible. Our normal computers, work with bits - basically tiny switches that are either ON or OFF. That’s it. Just 1s and 0s. Let’s say you wanted to crack a password with 10 characters. A regular computer would have to try each combination one at a time - that could take years! But a quantum computer? It could try all possible combinations simultaneously. It’s like having millions of computers working in parallel! This is possible because quantum computers use qubits, which can be ON and OFF at the same time. I know, I know. How is that possible? Well, this is where things get REALLY interesting. Researchers use individual atoms, super-cooled to near absolute zero - that’s colder than space itself! At these temperatures, atoms start behaving according to quantum mechanics, where the normal rules of physics just... don’t apply. But here’s the catch - it’s INCREDIBLY difficult to maintain this quantum state. Think about trying to balance a pencil on its tip... while riding a bicycle... during an earthquake. That’s STILL easier than keeping qubits stable! Scientists call this problem “decoherence.” Right now, the best quantum computers have about 100 working qubits. But here’s something wild - a quantum computer with just 300 qubits would be able to perform more simultaneous calculations than there are atoms in the observable universe! And the coolest part? We’re just scratching the surface. #tech #technology #stem #futuretech #futuretechnology

"Quantum computing is reaching an inflection point," Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said at Nvidia’s GTC Paris conference. Huang noted that Nvidia has more than 20 “AI factories” in development across the continent, promising European researchers and startups that their “GPU shortage will be resolved” soon. The CEO also touched on Nvidia’s quantum computing efforts, spotlighting its hybrid quantum-classical platform, Cuda Q, and claiming that the technology could begin solving real-world problems in the next few years. 🔗 Click the link in the bio to read more.

Quantum Computing: Parallel Universes for Calculations? 🤯⚛️ #QuantumComputing #Multiverse #Physics 📂 Archive File: The Multiverse Processor (File 1991-QUBIT) What if a computer could solve problems… by using parallel universes? Physicist Brian Cox explores one of the strangest ideas in modern physics. In quantum computing, particles can exist in multiple states at once a principle called superposition. Some interpretations suggest this could be like computations happening across many possible realities. It sounds impossible… But it’s rooted in real quantum theory.

Computing as we know it uses 1’s and 0’s to complete functions. Quantum computation, however, takes on richer states that go far beyond just a simple 1 or 0. In our latest discovery, our Quantum AI researchers hit a breakthrough that significantly shifts how we understand and operate quantum computing. Just ask Yu Chen, Lead Scientist in Quantum Metrology, who breaks down the bits and bobs of an enhanced quantum computer. At the link in bio, learn more about our recent milestone.
