So grateful for this lifelong practice of whirling that is some of the best movement medicine I have encountered in this lifetime. Starting in my early high school years I would whirl ecstatically in the back of Santana concerts with other fellow “spinners” for the entire performance. It was an instinctive practice that became a natural movement response to music that I loved. It was only after high school that I understood the deeper layers of whirling as a spiritual practice in community with the meeting of an incredible dervish brother @dervishaziz who opened the door for me to meet the Mevlevi community. I had the blessing of becoming a student of his mother Sheikha Hilal Anne who initiated me into the Mevlevi tradition (15 years ago.) Even though I have whirled my whole life, I am still a very young dervish on this path that I walk humbly. I have shared my whirling inspiration with beloveds around the world as I truly believe in its medicinal power to heal the fragmented heart and bring unity to humanity. However, I am not a “teacher” of the Mevlevi whirling tradition. I am a teacher of sacred embodiment practices and all of the ways we can connect to source through the inner temple of our hearts, bodies and breath. Whirling has an integral role in this practice. It is ancient and connects us to our ancestors, the universe and to the greater cosmos. Whirling practices have deep roots throughout Western & Central Asia but also in other parts of the world, as it is very much a practice connected with the movement of all life. From the inner workings of our protons and neutrons to the greater cosmos, all life is in a constant state of rotation. So many people ask how I don’t get dizzy when I whirl. For me, it’s breath and the grounding feeling of the earth under my feet. Sometimes fear or instability arise—but then shifts into letting go. Whirling began as a prayer practice of the Mevlevi dervishes in Turkey. Other Sufi traditions, like the Bektashi, also use turning and movement in their rituals. Over time, whirling has traveled beyond these roots and is now embraced around the world as a symbol of peace and connection. For me, whirling is prayer. But I also believe any movement can be deeply meaningful when it brings us closer to our bodies and ourselves. The body constantly communicates with us, yet we rarely listen. Tension, posture, breath, and movement often reveal emotions we have not yet understood with the mind.
