The key component is ammonium perchlorate, a powerful oxidant. When it decomposes under heat, it rapidly releases oxygen and hot gases. This oxygen then fuels the combustion of the organic binder, in this case an epoxy resin, which acts as both fuel and a solid "glue" that holds the entire mixture together. The reaction then becomes self-sustaining: the further the combustion progresses, the more heat it releases, which accelerates the decomposition of the oxidant and the combustion of the fuel. A small amount of copper oxide is also added, which acts as a catalyst: it accelerates certain stages of the reaction and allows for faster and more intense combustion. The result is this extremely energetic flame, composed of very hot gases and incandescent particles ejected at high speed.
