How can you tell how old that white pine tree is — and how can that reveal some mysteries about a forest’s history? Reposting this video from 2024! Many of our conifers branch in “whorls” — producing growing a single section of trunk and a “ring” of branches each year. This growth strategy can provide us a neat way to tell their age — count the whorls and it will tell you about how old the pine tree is. While it becomes more difficult as the trees get larger, a lot of times you can see the old branch scars, and still get a general idea of how old the tree is, even when the whorls aren’t immediately apparent. NOTE: this is true for “uninodal” pines, such as the eastern white pine and red pine native to my area, but some of the southern pines, like loblolly pine, are “multinodal” — capable of producing more than one whorl of branches per year. Here in Vermont, white pines are an opportunist, and VERY good at growing on old farmland — most of the places where we see them growing today are on the sites of abandoned agricultural land — (and in the case of red pine, where they were planted on abandoned agricultural land) and so knowing how to tell the age of these trees also tells us how long ago where we’re standing was a pasture! #forest #trees #nature

It’s that Pine of Year!🌲 This is white pine, the most common pine tree in the eastern US. A little ID trick for recognizing white pine is that it’s 𝘣𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘭𝘦𝘴 have 𝟱 𝗡𝗘𝗘𝗗𝗟𝗘𝗦, and the word 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦 has 𝟱 𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦.🤓 Pine needles are packed with vitamin C, a great immune booster, diuretic, and can help reduce cough and cold symptoms. Pine needle tea can be a delicious beverage to sip on through the winter, however if you want to get the most Vitamin C content out of them, they are best to infuse into cold water or honey.💧🍯 They can also be extracted into vinegar, oil, and alcohol. If you want the more resinous and pungent qualities to help thin congested mucus or soothe a sore throat, try a pine needle decoction! And while you’re at it, make sure to breathe in the steam as you sip.♨️🥰 Since pine grows abundantly through the winter, it is better to remember where it grows and come back to harvest periodically rather than keeping a large stash at home. You should also try to harvest from multiple different trees to avoid causing too much stress to one of them.👍 Let us know what you like to make with pine needles!💬 - Need some ideas of what to cook with Wild Foraged Plants?🤔 Check out the 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗘-𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 for time-tested recipes from wildcrafter and professional forager, botanist, and herbalist, Abby Artemisia at TheWanderSchool.com. 🥘🍲🥗 Want to learn more about how to forage and work with native plants? First Time Decandling Austrian Pine Transformation Begins! Working on shaping this Austrian pine into a garden tree with a Japanese zen garden vibe for the side yard. Here’s what I did 🕯️Decandling & Energy Balancing This season, I removed or trimmed most of the apex candles the area where the tree’s energy is strongest to slow vertical growth and redirect energy downward. In the middle section, I cut some candles in half to encourage even growth and promote back budding. I left the lower candles untouched to let the bottom branches extend and help develop that classic triangular silhouette you see in niwaki-style trees. 🌿 Lesson Learned This was my first time decandling, and I may have done it a little early. Ideally, I might’ve waited a week or two so the candles could harden slightly before cutting. Timing matters too early can delay or weaken bud development, too late and there’s not enough time left in the season for strong second flush growth. #Niwaki#JapaneseGarden#ZenGarden#GardenTransformation#gardenvibes#TreeShaping#pinetree#gardenart

Checking out the cones of the world’s largest species of pine, the sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana)! This species hold the records for being the tallest and most massive of all pines, up to 273 feet tall and growing to a diameter of 11.5 feet. It also has the longest cones of any conifer, growing to 2 feet long, though the coulter pine (Pinus coulteri) of Southern California has more massive cones. This species has its huge pine cones characteristically dangling from the very ends of its upper branches, making it utterly distinctive and identifiable from a long way away, so I thought I’d fly up and get a good look at them! You can see the previous year’s cones open and dry, their seeds all released last fall. You can also see the closed, shiny reddish cones that are still developing! Sugar pines, like many conifers, have winged seeds that helicopter down like maple seeds in the fall, being wind dispersed, but the big tasty seeds are so sought after by birds, bears and squirrels, that many are collected and eaten or stashed away before even taking flight! In this frenzied collection though, seeds are spread far and wide by wing or foot, then buried in the soil to be eaten later. But if the critter that stashed them dies or forgets where they are, then the seeds will sprout from the soil in spring! It is such a treat to get to hike around these remote and rugged Southern Cascade forests with these trees scattered in it. This plant is just so awe-inspiring! #pinuslambertiana #pinus #sugarpine #pine #pinecone #conifers #conifer #pinetree #pinecones #largestpinecone #botany #botanizing #floraofcalifornia #californianativeplants #calflora #bigtrees #treesofinstagram #treestagram #tree

My mum grows Pine Nuts 👏👏 This tree is the Mexican Pinyon or Pinus Cembroides They produce extremely big pine cones and very yummy pine nuts. But extracting them is a job in itself. 😳😳😳 #pinenuts #pinenut #pinuscembroides

The New Jersey Pine Barrens are a famous ecosystem, known for an amazing array of both woody and herbaceous plants. Here, we cover some of the most common plants found on xeric (dry) sites. These sites are sandy, acidic, and nutrient poor. NOTE: Pitch pine (Pinus rigida) is often referred to as “semi-serotinous,” meaning cones often open, while many remain closed. On the pine barren sites, they are especially serotinous, so I referred to them as such. . Other woody plants not mentioned, but common on these sites, are chestnut oak (Quercus montana), dwarf chestnut oak (Quercus prinoides), Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana), and Virginia pine (Pinus virginiana). When I return in the future, I’ll make a more complete video, with deeper discussions of these species and more. . Stay tuned for tomorrow’s part 2 on wetter pine barren sites! . #tree #trees #plant #plants #botany #garden #gardening #Forest #forestry #arborist #dendrology #horticulture

April 17 in Wisconsin. This Pine Warbler in a White Pine tree traveled a thousand miles from some warm sunshine only to be greeted by…this. He seems really hungry. He’s eating our suet like crazy. We promised NO MORE SNOW VIDEOS until fall, but….blame our broken promise on Wisconsin. #pinewarbler #warbler #warblercrazy #bestoftheusa_seasons #Raw_seasons #backyardbirding #birdsofwisconsin #spring #snow #wisconsinweather #springmigration #eye_spy_birds #Best_birds_of_IG #birds_private #dailybirdpix #birdsonearth #bird_freaks #birdwatchingmagazine #birdphotography #wildlifephotography #nikonnofilter

The strange case of the Cook pine trees: these trees always tilt by 8.55 degrees toward the equator, regardless of where on Earth they are growing. Whats interesting is the farther they are from the equator, the more they lean. This strange phenomenon is studied globally, though its exact cause remains a mystery.

Why we act fast against the Pine Beetle... 🧐 Once a tree is compromised, it becomes a “brood tree,” potentially infecting every pine in the area. Our team performed a strategic cut and removal to stop the cycle in its tracks. From detection to clean-up: total containment. #UrbanForestry #TreeHealth #PlantPathology #PineTrees #QuickResponse
