Think EMDR is just about “reprocessing memories”? Think again. 🧠✨ I’m breaking down the biggest misconceptions clients and therapists have — and why missing this piece can actually slow healing. #ptsd #TraumaTherapy #TherapistTips #EMDRtherapist #cptsd

Both Prolonged Exposure (PE) and EMDR are evidence-based treatments for trauma. PE works through repeated, sustained exposure to traumatic memories and cues. For some people, that structure is effective and empowering. For others, it can feel overwhelming or hard to stay with—especially when pacing and relational safety aren’t the primary focus. EMDR (especially attachment-focused, relational EMDR) tends to show similar outcomes with lower perceived distress during sessions and, for many clients, better tolerability. Same goal—healing trauma. Different nervous systems, different paths. 🚪This is why EMDR is my lane. #emdr #emdrtherapy #emdrtherapist #ptsd #cptsd

As a client, therapist, and consultant, I love EMDR because I’ve experienced it from every seat in the room—and it’s powerful in each one. As a client, EMDR helped me process what talk therapy alone couldn’t touch. It didn’t just help me “understand” my story—it helped my nervous system finally feel safe. As a therapist, I’ve watched clients move from stuck and overwhelmed to grounded and empowered. Seeing memories lose their charge and self-beliefs shift in real time never gets old. As a consultant, I’m constantly inspired by the way EMDR transforms clinicians’ confidence and deepens their attunement. It’s not just a protocol—it’s a way of listening, trusting the brain, and honoring the client’s innate capacity to heal. EMDR reminds me again and again: healing doesn’t have to take forever, and we don’t have to relive everything to move forward. Thankful to practice this work every day. 💛 #EMDR #TraumaTherapy #EMDRTherapist #Cptsd #PTSD

EMDR for anxiety + c-ptsd has been a game changer for me and so many of my clients so I love hearing when other ppl are considering it! It’s totally normal to feel a little nervous and there is so much prep work in EMDR that by the time you get to the reprocessing stage you’re almost, dare I say, excited to do it because you’ve been thinking & talking about it for so long. But you’re always in control. You won’t be forced to continue if you decide it’s not for you. And you will be given plenty of grounding tools to help you if emotions are heavy. Most therapists will do an intro call so you can chat with them ahead starting, too. 💬 What are other questions do you have about EMDR? ~ If you’re new here, welcome! 🫶🏻 Follow @jesswhitneytherapy for relatable mental health content & tools that actually help 🧠✨ #emdr #anxietyrelief #cptsdhealing #emdrtherapy

Think of a trauma memory like a skinned knee that never got the chance to heal. 🩹 Every time you touch it, it stings. It feels fresh. That is what unprocessed trauma is—a memory that still carries a high "emotional charge." In traditional weekly therapy, we often have to open that wound and then close it back up 50 minutes later. It can leave you feeling raw in the days between sessions. This is why EMDR Intensives are changing the game: Instead of opening and closing, we stay with the process until the body *finishes* the update. ✨ Studies show strong drops in symptoms. ✨ Clients report less distress between sessions because the wound isn't being constantly poked without resolution. The goal? To make the past finally feel like the past. #TraumaHealing #EMDR #TherapyExplained #MentalHealthAwareness #PTSD #AnxietyRelief #SomaticHealing #TherapistReels #BrainHealth

Still feeling triggered even after years of talking about your trauma in therapy? Here’s why... Just talking about something over and over doesn’t create healing. Traditional talk therapy helps you understand what happened. It’s great for building insight and awareness. But trauma isn’t stored only as a story. It’s stored in the nervous system. Here’s how EMDR can help... When something traumatic happens, the brain doesn’t always file it away as a memory with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Instead, it can get “stuck” in survival mode. That’s why you can logically know you’re safe now, but your body still reacts like it’s happening again. That’s where your triggers come in. EMDR helps the brain reprocess those experiences so they become integrated memories instead of ongoing threats. It helps your brain recognize: this happened, it was painful, and it’s over. If you want to learn more about EMDR and it might be helpful for you, follow along! #emdrtherapist #emdrtherapy #ptsd #traumatherapy #cptsd

Sometimes talk therapy just isn’t enough to stop your body from reacting to a past that your mind already understands, and that’s okay! I get asked about EMDR more than almost anything else in my office. So many of us are exhausted talking in circles around our healing. We’ve spent years analyzing our past, understanding our “whys,” and naming our triggers, yet our bodies are still reacting as if the danger is happening right now. EMDR takes the emotional charge out of your memories so that reaction becomes adaptable. We’re teaching your brain that you’re safe in the present moment. Taking power away from the pain of the past. These are just a few of the most common questions I get, but if you have another, please let me know! You don’t dissociate because you’re difficult🙅🏻‍♀️ You dissociate because your nervous system learned how to survive what felt overwhelming. Floating. Foggy. Talking about something awful like you’re reading a grocery list. Spacing out the second therapy gets close to something real. None of that is random. Dissociation often shows up when: ✔️something feels emotionally intense ✔️connection feels risky ✔️your system predicts overwhelm before you consciously do It’s not you being resistant. It’s your body protecting you in the only way it knew how. On the podcast this week, I answer ⬇️ ➡️Why do I dissociate more in therapy than anywhere else? ➡️How do I tell the difference between zoning out and dissociation? ➡️Why can I tell my trauma story without feeling anything? 🧡Comment 116 and I’ll send you this week’s episode … #cptsd #dissociation #traumarecovery #emdrtherapy #nervoussystemregulation

If your body always feels tense even when nothing is “wrong,” there’s usually a reason. Chronic stress and past experiences can keep your nervous system stuck in survival mode. The good news? Your body can unlearn this.
