Was walking along Toh Yi Drive yesterday when these wild clusters of luscious pink cherry- and green grape-like fruits, dangling temptingly over the fence of the Toh Yi Community Garden, stopped me in my tracks. They looked so pretty — like tiny Christmas baubles. Then I spotted the warning signs: “Danger. Do not eat. Another explained they were fruits of Cayratia mollissima, a wild grape climber whose stems can reach ten metres long. I’d encountered this plant two years ago along a park connector and, giving in to curiosity, plucked a fruit to taste. Its translucent flesh resembled a grape — mildly sweet but bland — until seconds later, my tongue and throat began to burn and itch. The irritation lingered for 20 minutes, even after frantic rinsing at a nearby washroom! Found in Southeast Asia, these vines thrive in rainforests and swamp forests. Though ornamental and not endangered, their fruits are best admired, not eaten. Apparently, they’re edible but not raw, and the leaves can be brewed into tea. No thanks — once bitten, twice shy.
