What does it take to transplant a Windmill Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei)? We’ll show you! 🌴 Our horticulturists recently moved this palm from the @airandspacemuseum to the Enid A. Haupt Garden. They started by removing the oldest and largest palm fronds to reduce the top weight and water loss after being transplanted. Then it was dug by hand- since all palms initiate their roots from a central point on the trunk, it was not necessary to have a large root ball like with typical trees. After it was dug up, it was carefully moved from the upper-most terraced bed of the garden to a waiting bucket on a piece of equipment. Once securely strapped to the utility vehicle, it took the short drive down Independence Avenue to the Haupt Garden where it was lowered into place and planted in it’s new, loving home. I am growing palm trees outside in New York City! Here’s how I did it 🌴 ⬇️ There are thousands of species of palm, this is one of the most cold tolerant, Trachycarpus fortueni - the Windmill Palm. They can handle temperatures below 10°F (-12.2°C) for a short period of time but this winter was below that 6 TIMES! Some years they can survive without protection but every now and again we get winters like this that will kill then off. The only palms I’ve seen really reliably survive without protection are short growing USA native palms like Sabal minor!

Many people have been waiting for this one. It’s time to talk about the ‘Windmill Palm’, known to be one of the hardiest palm trees available🌿 The plants that we have in our Garden Centre are still a bit young and will need a little TLC going into the winter season. Mature windmill palms have been known to tolerate temperatures between -15 to −20 °C 5 to −4 °F 🪴Young palms, which is what we have in our facility today, are unable to withstand the same temperatures as mature palms. They are more likely to survive winters with temperatures staying above −8 °C (18 °F). We recommend winterizing your palm when temperatures dip later this fall season. ➡️ Use a frost cloth, starting at the base of your trunk and wrapping it all the way around to the very top of your palm. Make sure to cover the heart of the palm, this is the part where the fronds/leaves emerge from your plant. ➡️ Once your palm has been covered with a frost cloth, wrap roping or twine material around your material to hold it in place for the upcoming frosty months. ➡️ You can keep your plant covered until early spring. Once temperatures stay above 30 °F you can remove the cloth. ➡️If you’re looking to add a little more winter protection to your palm you can always add a few bags of mulch to the base of your windmill palm. 10” potted Windmill Palm $39.99+tax *While supplies last.
