A powerful nor’easter hit Nantucket Sunday night and into Monday with blizzard conditions, taking down numerous trees and power lines that knocked out power for thousands on the island. There was moderate coastal flooding along the waterfront and at Jetties Beach, but it was the powerful wind gusts topping 80 mph that combined with heavy, wet snow to take down numerous utility wires and poles. The Steamship Authority and Hy-Line Cruises have cancelled service for all of Monday, and the town is urging people to stay off the roads as crews work to restore power and clear the roads. Nantucket Harbor has iced up along the edges and in shallow areas, including the Nantucket Boat Basin, the town pier and toward Head of the Harbor, harbormaster Sheila Lucey said Tuesday. “It’s not safe to walk on salt-water ice. The thickness can vary. It’s unpredictable,” Luce said. “It’s nowhere near thick enough to be putting anything on it. With this continuing cold, I’m expecting the icing conditions to stay the same or get worse, increasing our safety concerns.” Drone footage from over Nantucket and Madaket harbors earlier today shows how varied the ice coverage is across the island. Nantucket’s high temperatures are not expected to climb above freezing for at least 10 days, with lows in the mid-teens to mid-20s. Lucey said she is working closely with the Coast Guard to coordinate ice-breaking boats to ensure the channel stays open for Steamship Authority and Hy-Line ferries should the ice get thicker. Tonight’s high tide is supposed to be higher so we can expect more flooding at the usual suspects pictured in this vid from earlier today #coastalstorm #coastalflooding #flooding #nantucket #easyst
