5 tips to prepare your home for winter #lifehacks #hacks #firsttimehomeowners #firsttimehomebuyer #homeownertips #homeowners #winterize #dontbesorry #homeownerlife #wintertips #salfinds

Winterizing your outdoor garden hose and spigots is essential to prevent freezing and damage during cold weather. Follow these easy steps for peace of mind this winter: 1. Disconnect and Drain the Hose - Remove the hose from the outdoor spigot or faucet. - Drain all the water from the hose by holding one end up to let gravity push the water out. - Coil the hose neatly and store it in a dry, sheltered location (like a garage or shed) to prevent cracking. 2. Shut Off the Water Supply - Locate the shutoff valve inside your home that controls the water flow to the outdoor spigot. This is often found in a basement, crawlspace, or utility room. -Turn off the valve completely to cut off the water supply to outdoor faucets. 3. Drain the Spigots - Open the outdoor spigot fully to allow any remaining water in the pipe to drain out. - Leave the spigot open slightly to allow any remaining moisture to escape and prevent pressure buildup. 4. Insulate Outdoor Faucets (Spigots) - Use foam faucet covers or insulating faucet covers (available at hardware stores) to protect the spigot from freezing temperatures. - Alternatively, wrap the spigot in old towels or rags, secured with duct tape, and then cover with plastic bags to keep moisture out. 5. Install a Frost-Free Faucet Sillcock - Consider replacing your standard spigot with a frost-free faucet sillcock to prevent freezing. - A frost-free sillcock extends into the warmer part of your home and has a built-in mechanism to stop water from freezing inside the pipe. - Install the sillcock by: - Shutting off the water supply. - Removing the old faucet. - Installing the new frost-free faucet, ensuring it has a slight downward pitch so any water inside drains away. - Apply plumber's tape to the threads and tighten to prevent leaks. 6. Check and Replace Any Leaky Parts -Inspect your spigot, hoses, and connectors for any leaks or damage. Repair or replace worn-out parts before storing them for the winter. It is that time of year again. Time to winterize your home - inside and out. I know we all think of winterizing as things we just need to do every year. But I think we forget the huge savings that come with properly winterizing your home. Sort of the “why” behind that weekend to-do list. Here are my (and Mr Babs) top 5 winterizing steps. I don’t know about you…but I AM looking forward to cozy nights around the fire. Just as soon as my winterizing list is checked off;) ❄️1 Change that Furnace Filter. All that gunk can really block the airflow after time and make your system work way harder costing you efficiency and money! Also, if you don’t change the filter, you can put so much overwork on the system to get around clogged air ducts that the entire system can fail, costing you $4,000-$12,000 to replace. Check your manual for specific timing but you should change your filter at least every 90 days. ❄️2 Turn off the water to the outside. As the temperature drops, water close to the outside can freeze leading to burst pipes which can cost you between $200 and $1,000 to repair. To turn off the water to the outside: Turn off water source to outside Take the hose off and store indoors Drain water from spigot For added protection, install a cheap foam cover ❄️3 Clean out those gutters. If you don’t..clogged gutters can backup which can cause basement flooding, roof damage and leaks inside the home.… and you guessed it, can cost you thousands of dollars! Start to clear gutter by the drain spout Best to do gutter cleaning when leaves are damp and not wet Empty leaves into a bucket and discard ❄️4 Put outdoor furniture away or at least tarp down and bungee. Outdoor furniture and especially cushions are not made to withstand harsh elements. Bring the furniture indoors if you have space, or use furniture covers or a tarp and bungees. ❄️5 Change the battery in your fire and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure you change your batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors two times a year. There is nothing more priceless than you and your family’s safety. XO Babs #winterize #howto

🥶🥶 WINTERIZE YOUR HOME - SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS 🥶🥶 ✨ 1. Faucet Covers - Search for “Faucet Insulation Cover” 🛠️ and you’ll find them at HEB, Home Depot, or other stores. 🏬 Make sure it seals well! If it doesn’t, adjust a little and see if it helps. 🧰💧 ✨ 2. Sprinkler System - Follow the video closely! 🎥 Most Hunter sprinkler systems have a manual run mode. Test it first, ✅ then turn off the sprinkler valve. 🚰 Make sure you’re NOT shutting off the main valve from your water meter—that’s your whole house shut-off! 🚨 Look for the 3rd or 4th control box with a white pipe and a blue shut-off valve, like I showed in the video. 🏡💡 ✨ 3. Hey Kids! 👋🏻👋🏻 Winter time is upon us. Here is how to change the seal under an exterior door. You got this! 👍🏻 #dadhowdoi #dad #diy #doorseal #winterize

We’re continuing winterizing our chicken coop today with an easy hack to keep your waterers from freezing this winter! All you need is an inexpensive fish tank heater! The one I got costs around $12 and is good for tanks up to 20 gallons. I have a @rentacoop waterer and all I did was submerge the heater in the tank and secure the wire so the chickens don’t mess with it! The only thing is you MUST make sure the heater is always submerged in water or it will burn out and break. Yay for no more defrosting frozen chicken waterers!! I will link our favorite heaters in our Amazon storefront (link in my bio), or comment “heater” and I’ll message you the link directly! #hettyshomestead #homesteading #hobbyfarm #fresheggs #backyardchickens #chickencoop #chickensofinstagram #eatonfam #winterization #winterizingyourcoop #winterize #chickenwaterer

Another winter storm is coming tomorrow in Texas, if you have not winterized your sprinkler system , your backflow preventer yet, it’s time to do so. When it comes to freezing weather, I personally would shut off my water just in case we lose power. To each their own , stay safe out there.
