Beautiful video of European Wolves howling. Take a look and see how different they are colour and feature wise from American Timber Wolves. Very very different. Brown colour like a wild rabbit with more petite features. Wolves develop certain features depending on the environment and Europe was deeply forested at one point with a lot of hilly terrain. The wolves of North America are leggier due to traversing wider plains, also taller as they take down larger prey. The longer the legs is usually down to how much snow they need to walk through. Arctic wolves are very leggy. The Japanese wolf, before going extinct, was extremely small like a dog due to its small prey and hilly environment. Why do Wolves Howl? 1. Communicate location A wolf’s howl can travel up to 6–10 miles (10–16 km) in open terrain. It helps separated pack members relocate one another during hunts or territory patrols. 2. Strengthen social bonds Group howling reinforces pack cohesion. Studies show wolves respond more strongly to the howls of familiar pack members than to strangers — proving it’s deeply social and relationship-based. 3. Defend territory Howling advertises occupancy and warns neighbouring packs. It reduces the need for direct physical conflict by signalling presence and collective strength from a distance. 🌕 And no — wolves do not howl at the moon. They lift their heads back to project sound further, allowing the howl to travel long distances without obstruction. So why the myth? Wolves are often more active at night (crepuscular/nocturnal behaviour), and a bright full moon simply makes them easier for humans to see. Wolves have deep, steady howls that travel long distances to communicate with their pack or mark territory. It’s a natural part of how they survive in the wild. Huskies also howl, but theirs is usually higher-pitched and shorter. They howl to get attention, respond to sounds, or “talk” to people. Why do wolves howl? There are many reason why wolves howl out in the wild. It is their most common form of communication, and they do not howl directly at the moon. 😉 They are crepuscular animals, which means they are most active in the dawn and dusk. So, it can be a coincidence that seems to be them howling while the moon is out! Typically, wolves howl to rally the pack together, to find a missing pack member, to approach a hunt, or it’s used as territorial expression to other wolves. Their howls can be heard up to 10 miles in open terrain. Some wolves may have more low pitched or high pitched howls. Everyone sounds different. Just like our dogs bark! In the weeks leading up to mating season, howling can also be used from single wolves that are looking for a mate. When an individual is howling, others also looking for a mate can communicate back. Letting them know they are interested in breeding. Here at Roam, our wolfdogs typically howl a couple times a day, that last about 60-90 seconds. They may howl when they see us in the morning, when they’re hungry, when someone arrives home, or when they want attention. Everyone here also sounds different and we can tell who starts the singing. Riggs has a lower pitched voice, Felony has more of a higher pitched voice, and Kovu sometimes sounds like a baby bear cub. 😂 it’s a beautiful sound to hear and it makes them feel united when they all sing together!
