— The history of women in science is unfair, unequal, and marked by a lack of proper acknowledgment. ✨ Marie Curie was a physicist and chemist. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person to win it twice, and the only one to win in two scientific fields. At first, Marie had to pursue her education in secret, because women were not allowed in the university in Poland. Later, she was denied to the French Academy of Sciences despite her significant contributions to the field, as the Academy was an all-male institution at the time. ✨ Irène Joliot-Curie, Marie’s daughter, won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry with her husband for discovering artificial radioactivity. Like her mother’s, she had her achievements sometimes attributed to her husband, although she was an independent and pioneering scientist in her own right. ✨ Mileva Marić-Einstein was a physicist and mathematician. She studied at Zürich Polytechnic in a highly male dominated field. She was the only woman in her group of six students, and the fifth woman to enter that section. Her contributions to modern physics, alongside her husband’s work (Albert Einstein), are still debated, possibly overshadowed by his fame and not properly recognized. ✨ Rosalind Franklin was a chemist and X-ray crystallographer whose work was key to understanding DNA’s structure. Her data was used by Watson and Crick without permission to develop the final model of the DNA double helix. Watson and Crick were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962. Franklin, who had died in 1958, was not mentioned in their Nobel Prize acknowledgments, and the Nobel Prize is not awarded posthumously. These stories have become a symbol of the challenges women face in achieving recognition in the scientific community. They expose the importance of addressing gender bias and ensuring that contributions to science are acknowledged regardless of the scientist’s gender. Their legacies continue to inspire efforts to promote equity and inclusion in STEM fields. 👩‍🔬 👇 Tag a woman in science you look up to! ✨🔬 —

Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science 🧪 🧬

Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science 🧪 🧬 🪐 🌟 ✨ This year I wanted to highlight some of the women I’ve been inspired by over the years. The resilience and strength all of them had, paving the way for girls like me to be able to pursue the most fascinating topic in the world (I’m biased..). Even though a lot of improvements have been made, studies are still showing discrimination towards women in science. There are also still stereotypes preventing girls from seeing themselves in science. You know this is a topic I care about deeply, and I will continue to make as much change as I can. 🩷 Did I miss anyone? Comment someone that inspires you! ⬇️ #womeninstem #internationaldayofwomenandgirlsinscience

STEM has often been seen as a male-dominated space, but that doesn’t mean it should stay that way. More and more women are showing up, studying, researching, and leading in these fields — and proving every day that passion and determination matter far more than stereotypes. For me, choosing physics and engineering has been both challenging and rewarding. There were times I questioned if I really belonged, but I’ve learned that there’s room here for all of us — and our voices, ideas, and perspectives are so needed. So if you’re a young woman thinking about a STEM career: know that you absolutely have a place here. Don’t let old labels or doubts hold you back. The future of science and engineering is brighter when everyone is part of it 🌍💡 #physics #university #womeninstem #study #selfgrowth #womeninphysics #stem #explore #degree #engineering #discipline #autistic #phd #phdstudent #diversityandinclusion #representation

Today, on International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we’re celebrating the voices and wisdom of women shaping science and technology across Europe. Together with the organisations of the EIROforum group, we hope to inspire more women to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathemtics). „Beauty is the most important thing about you.“ If anyone ever tells you that, just remember these extraordinary women who carved their names into history—not with their looks, but with their brilliance and groundbreaking discoveries. 🔬 Marie Curie-Skłodowska - The first woman to win two Nobel Prizes. She discovered polonium and radium, pioneering research in radioactivity and revolutionizing medicine. 🧬 Rosalind Franklin – Her work was crucial in determining the molecular structures of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), RNA (ribonucleic acid), viruses, coal, and graphite. 🌟 Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin – The scientist who discovered what stars are made of, proving they are mostly hydrogen and helium. Her findings reshaped astronomy. 📡 Hedy Lamarr – A Hollywood actress and an inventor. Her frequency-hopping technology became the foundation for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, changing the way we connect today.

Women in geoscience you should know about! These women were respected and pioneering members of their fields who overcame great prejudice and obstacles to pave the way for all future female scientists. “I had to choose between being liked and being respected” is a sentiment I hear from so many female scientists even now in many fields and while I am constantly humbled and grateful for the opportunities we have now that women did not before, it’s important to remember they still need protecting.
