The future of work= independent. We are moving towards a new workforce fabric that will skew heavily towards independent work and entrepreneurship. Instead of thinking about yourself in terms of the job that you do think of yourself as a mini organization that offers a bundle of skills that can be applied across various companies and projects. It’s a mindset shift for sure. There are a few job-negotiable skills for this future (shared at the end of the video). There are many implications of workforce that is grounded in independent work, from healthcare to security, which I write about in my Substack.

In an era of rapidly evolving technology, we need to decouple jobs from identity. The workforce today’s students will enter will be unrecognizable. But perhaps more importantly, we shrink dreams into job descriptions. Kids don’t think in terms of jobs. We bring that to them. We ask them what they want to be, but we don’t ask them who they want to be at all.

The Future of Work: a landmark report by McKinsey titled “Agents, Robots and Us” has been released, revealing that 57% of current US work hours will likely be automated away. This reflects how profoundly work will change. Now, that doesn’t mean mass unemployment or job loss. It simply means mass job transformation as we enter a new work era of people + agents + robots. Yes - many tasks will be automated by AI, but it simply means that job functions will change over the next several years. This will unlock nearly $3 trillion of economic value in the United States. Another key thing to note: demand for AI fluency – the ability to use and manage AI tools – has grown by 7X in the last two years, faster than for any other skill in US job postings. The surge is visible across industries and likely marks the beginning of much bigger changes ahead. On average, 39% of our skills could become obsolete or need to be transformed by 2030 (World Economic Forum 2025 Jobs report). We have to be willing to learn and continue to evolve our skills. We also have to expect our roles to change. I know it’s overwhelming. But you can start anywhere: watching free YouTube videos, attending sessions your company is hosting, using AI on your own. AI is a general purpose technology, these technologies change society at a foundational level. Even if the technology stopped progressing, the AI that exists today will still lead to a lot of disruption in the workplace. I personally do not think leaders are sufficiently addressing the impact AI will have on the workforce. More on this soon. My biggest advice is do not wait until the last minute to learn. Once you start engaging with AI you can see it’s not as overwhelming as it may seem! We engage with these tools in our natural language. I will do my best to continue to share and inform.
