It’s time I admitted that: 1. I had to stop working sooner than I wanted to. I told people I was ready, but I wasn’t fully prepared for how much the rhythm of work mattered. I don’t miss all the time-wasting corporate politics or the nonsense. I do miss the smart people and the structure. 2. I have a hard time saying “No”. Not because I need to please, but because I’m afraid of shutting doors. Lately, I’m realizing some doors need to close so I can put myself first. 3. Money still messes with my head. I was raised to save. I lived to save. Now I’m retired and not saving anymore (only spending)… and I’m still learning what that means. 4. My kids - now adults - are the center of my world. I’ll always show up for them. Letting go of being a full-time Dad and shifting into a “consulting role” is harder than I expected. Fortunately, they’re figuring things out better than I did. 5. I am a worrier. I put up a different exterior, but sometimes I even worry about worrying. I’m working on it. Slowly. 6. I can’t sit still. I like life in smaller chunks. I’m usually thinking about what’s next while I’m right here. I can’t decide if that’s a flaw or just how I’m wired. 7. I don’t take enough time to appreciate my friends and family. I never take them for granted, but I need to tell them more often how much I value their love and support. 8. Sometimes I think that my way is the only way. It took me forever to realize that while I’ve got some great ideas, often someone else has something better. I still have to learn how to listen more to others. I don’t have it all figured it out. Saying these things out loud and writing them down helps me realize how far I’ve come and how far I still have to go.
