We left the UK in Dec 2023 and decided not to put our kids into a traditional school setting . The reason being we felt our son would not thrive in a uk school. We wanted to explore other options of education that would maybe be better suited to our kids needs. We found so many alternative ways on educating our kids. Most didn’t use standardised testing or were fully classroom based. We world school 🌎our kids and use world schooling hubs like @boundlesslife to help. It suits our kids and we love the flexibility. This really hits home when we look back 😓 By making this decision we really found out that you can ‘Opt-out’ of the school system in the UK! You DO have a choice, your children are YOURS and nobody should make you feel otherwise. Granted that a lot of children are suited to the schooling system but some aren’t, and that’s ok 🙏🏼 we have chosen to world school our children and we are so thankful that we have managed to make this happen. We live in a School Fixated Society. This means we are fed the belief that childhood revolves around school, that a childhood without institutionalised learning is neglectful and that children living without school are missing out. My friends, in my experience, and the hundreds of families I’ve worked with over the years - the very opposite is true. Sure, there are things our children miss out on, I won’t lie about that. But every thing they don’t get, is replaced by something easily as wonderous and magical. We’ve done this ten day mission three years in a row now- camping with hundreds of unschoolers on the beach and then we roll down to @earthbeatfestival (I’m doing a parenting workshop tomorrow at 3:30 if you are here!) I have absolutely no doubt that my kids will treasure this sensation, of rolling in a giant caravanesi from one incredible place to another, with families they’ve hung out with since they were babies. School Fixated Society yells “what about socialisation?!” and meanwhile our kids are getting their scuba diving cert, setting up pottery studios with money they fundraiser together, moving wood for the firebaked pizza van here at the festi and getting five free pizzas. If you ask me it sounds like a system that’s doomed to have our kids fail and grow to be in a conditioned box. Well not my kid! Before I even had my kid I saw the system for what it was and knew it was not going to be for us. And it has been the best journey learning to unschool ourselves and worldschool with our kid. What I wish I knew before we spent a full year worldschooling… 1. I wasn’t crazy for wanting something different… and pushing past my fears would show me just how amazing things can be when you don’t let fear hold you back! 2. I didn’t have to be scared about my kids falling behind. They would grow in ways I couldn’t even imagine! . They studied math, English and science through a hands on, child led, amazing curriculum… but also learned resilience, empathy, global awareness, and independence by living in three different countries, meeting people from different cultures, and having life changing experiences! They didn’t just read about the world, they belonged to it 🌎 3. I didn’t have to do this alone. It didn’t have to be as hard as I thought is should be! Boundless Life gave us the structure, the support, and a school community that moved with us. Plus meeting other like minded families, who made this same crazy decision we did, would be show us that we truly weren’t alone! There are some seasons in a home educators life where the naysayers and interrupters, be them family members or strangers, feel loud and undermining.
