49,825,454

Horsehair worms do actually manipulate their hosts (including praying mantises, crickets, and other insects) to seek water and "commit suicide" by jumping into it. This is a well-documented parasitic behavior. The parasite grows inside the insect host, and when mature, it releases proteins that affect the host's central nervous system. These chemicals essentially hijack the host's behavior, compelling it to seek out and jump into water. Once in water, the horsehair worm breaks free from the host's body and swims away to mate. The host typically dies in the process. This is a real example of parasite manipulation, where the parasite alters its host's behavior specifically to complete its own life cycle. #PrayingMantis #ParasiteLife #reels #WeirdNature #donaldtrump

Aeolosoma worms are known as suction-feeding organisms because their mouths function a bit like a vacuum cleaner.  When these animals find some food, they place their mouth over it and use tiny beating projections inside their mouths to create a vacuum, which sucks up the food. 🧫🔬by @my.microscopic.world #Microscopic #micro #worms

Tubifex tubifex, also called the sludge worm, “Boogie Worm”, or sewage worm, is a species of tubificid segmented worm that inhabits the sediments of lakes and rivers on several continents. The worms can survive with little oxygen by waving hemoglobin-rich tail ends to exploit all available oxygen, and can exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen through their thin skins, in a manner similar to frogs. They can also survive in areas heavily polluted with organic matter that almost no other species can endure. By forming a protective cyst and lowering its metabolic rate, T. tubifex can survive drought and food shortage. Tubifex worms are often used as a live food for fish, especially tropical fish and certain other freshwater species. They have been a popular food for the aquarium trade almost since its inception, and gathering them from open sewers for this purpose was quite common until recently. This worm is a nematode, also called roundworm 🪱 They’re pretty much the most abundant animals on earth with an estimate of around 450000000000000000000 individuals inhabiting soils everywhere on the planet; that’s around 60 billion worms per person!! 🙃 I actually found this one in a moss sample from Hawaï which @dolanfam kindly sent me back in March 🥰 One of the first thing that comes to mind when hearing about round worms is how dangerous they are as parasites. Their hosts can be pretty much any types of animals and plants. Your cat or dog probably had some preventative treatments for them and some may even had caught them 😳. Although, the ones I find in my samples are free-living and aren’t parasites of vertebrates. Nematodes are literally everywhere on earth; they found ways to colonize freshwater and marine habitats from polar to tropical regions and from mountain tops to the deep sea. They’re also very abundant in soils, one acre of topsoil can be filled with billions of nematodes! It might sounds gross like this but they’re super important decomposers and feed on fungi, bacteria, algae, other small animals, fecal matter and dead organisms. You may have heard of one really popular non-parasitic nematode living in soil named C. elegans. Its whole genome has been sequenced before any other multicellular organism, every cell lineage from zygote to adult has been retraced and all of its neurones and connections between has been mapped! It has since become a model organism for molecular developmental biology! Video taken with my iPhone mounted on a BA310E Motic microscope with an @ilabcam adapter 🔬 References: Hickman, C.
