As Michigan nears one year since the state's Supreme Court struck down mandatory life-without-parole (LWOP) sentences for people convicted of first-degree murder at age 20 or younger, the wave of reopened cases are still working their way through the Kalamazoo County court system, according to prosecutors. Kalamazoo County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Jeff Williams said the April 2025 ruling has forced prosecutors to move quickly under strict deadlines, while reopening cases that many families believed were settled. Prosecutors are still working to bring closure to the majority of those reopened cases in Kalamazoo County, Williams said. The April 2025 ruling changed how first-degree murder cases involving 19- and 20-year-olds are handled.

WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. - A 22-year-old Michigan man briefly appeared in court over Zoom with a filter accidentally activated on his camera. He was attending the virtual hearing to enter a guilty plea on an assault and battery charge stemming from assaulting someone in Van Buren Township in August 2025. The man initially joined the hearing with a virtual background of the Golden Gate Bridge, but moments later, his video switched to a cat filter, drawing attention from the court. Aw, snap. My bad. Im sorry, he said as the filter appeared on screen. The judge said that the matter would have to be delayed if the defendant could not compose himself. Newly released surveillance video shows double-murder suspect Michael McKee being booked at the Franklin County Corrections Center in Ohio. McKee was arrested in Illinois and then extradited after allegedly murdering his ex-wife, Monique Tepe, and her husband, Spencer Tepe, inside their home. The couple's children were inside the home at the time of the murders but were not injured.
