Over the last year ive fallen victim to “the loop” which is a common migration that many vanlifers can get stuck repeating, sometimes for years. Winter is oddly the socializing time. My path started in the desert of Joshua tree for a holiday event, then heading to the largest gathering in the boondocking capital and learning to repel in the canyons of Arizona and spending the rest of winter in San Diego. For those brave enough to take their rig to a different country, they will spend it eating tacos on the beaches of Baja Mexico. As things warm the climbers head to the rock walls of utah and the playground of moab. As summer comes people split up more, some going to their seasonal jobs an others on a national park circuit through the Tetons, Glacier, and Olympic, hitting the hot springs in Idaho. Most people will end up together again in Bend at some point for concerts, to float the river and explore the Oregon coast as they go south to start it all over. The west has an endless amount of things to explore and outdoor hobbies, but what has kept me is the people. Without this community im not sure I would still be traveling. The constant goodbyes in nomadic life are hard, but being able to spend weeks together and reunite in a short time makes it the best of both worlds. Over this year, I’ve spent more time with the same friends than I did in college. Its basically a horizontal dorm. Growing up I had a dream like many to live in a neighborhood with all of my best friends. With my road trip I thought I’d maybe find a city that felt like home and a group of people i belonged in that would make me settle down and put roots in but I ended up finding that in this moving Caravan. One thing that makes these people so special is a quote someone said while we all sat on a random abandoned bridge we turned into a dance floor which is “be crew, not passengers”. Who needs Netflix when you have the most eccentric cast of characters outside of your door.
