As the Broadway Gospel Choir recorded their vocals for this song, Karen O stood in the center of the group, absorbing the vibration of their pleading and praying. “I never experienced anything like that, man,” she told Spin magazine. “It was hair-raising, it was spine-tingling.” Karen O told NME that the first version the band was recorded of this song was terrible. “Then it hit me,” she continued. “’You know what would make it really great? A gospel choir.’ I’d been listening to Lou Reed’s Transformer a lot and I loved those soulful back-up singers.” Karen explained the song’s meaning to NME: “You can think of this as someone who’s out of your league and not knowing if you can hold court with them,” she said. “It also could be about finding out something about someone you don’t know already. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Glastonbury, 2009 — when they tore into “Date With the Night.” Like a lot of people, I first discovered them through Maps (video directed by Patrick Daughters). Karen O’s real tears gave it an intensity that stuck with me. I went straight out and bought Fever to Tell — and there wasn’t a skippable track on it. But it wasn’t until I saw them live that it fully hit. That was it. From then on, any time they played within 250 miles of San Diego, I bought every ticket for every night and drove show to show. Because it wasn’t just a concert — it was one of the most electrifying, high-intensity, unforgettable rock shows I’d ever seen. Mark you calendars, because this Friday night New York City’s indie rock darlings @yeahyeahyeahs have a date with the rage couch! Join bandmates @ko @little_vampire and @brianchase123 as they curate some of their top tier music videos. This rage ep was filmed during their 2003 trip to Australia, where they performed as a part of the legendary Livid Festival lineup. It was at the start of this tour Karen O fell head first off the stage at Sydney’s Metro Theatre (mid-set!) and had to be hospitalised for a concussion. She then persevered to play the following festival dates, effectively earning her stripes as an honorary “Aussie battler”. For such a notorious band, expect an equally notorious lineup of music videos with a little bit of everything in the mix.
