These two mammal lineages took VERY different paths… 66 million years ago at the end of the age of dinosaurs, many modern orders of mammal had already diverged from each other. Though fossil evidence is relatively scarce, we can infer this by looking at genetic differences between living animals and calculate how long it would take for those differences to occur. In the case of humans and deer, they belong to the Magnorder Boreoeutheria which includes primates, rodents, carnivorans, and hoofed animals. Though the oldest fossil evidence is about 66 million years old, genetic evidence suggests they may have diverged as early as 100 mya. Either way by the time the dinosaurs became extinct, the earliest ancestors of both primates (Purgatorius) and ungulates (Protungulatum) had appeared. Purgatorius was a tiny (50 cm, 40 gram) squirrel-like mammal that had adaptations for climbing and living in trees. It was probably omnivorous and ate fruits, flowers, and insects. Protungulatum was only slightly larger and probably also omnivorous. Based on morphology of its teeth and inner ear, they were some of the earliest relatives of the hoofed animals that would evolve later in the Cenozoic. Interestingly, the oldest confirmed fossils of this animals are actually known from the Late Cretaceous. Over time, the descendants of Purgatorius and Protungulatum went on very different paths. Purgatorius would give rise to the great diversity of primates, from tarsiers to lemurs, capuchins to baboons, gorillas to modern humans. Protungulatum and its kin would evolve into the great diversity of ungulates from deer and pigs, to cows and giraffes. It’s wild to think that the paths these two lineages would take would put them on completely different trajectories. Art by @nobumichi.tamura and Antonio R. Junzi Imperialis is an extinct species of gibbon found in China that was believed to be alive around 2,000 years ago. The only evidence of it’s existence was found in the tomb of an ancient noblewoman named Lady Xia, and it’s discovery could represent the first known post glacial extinction of an ape/any continental primate. While it is a remarkable discovery, its extinction represents the underestimated effect humans have had on primate population loss, and how long humans have been keeping primates as pets.
