This one can be really tough 😬 Shingles aka herpes zoster 🌹 is a reactivation of chickenpox virus 🦠 in adult age typically after a stressful event (social, physical, other previous virus infection or disease). After the chickenpox manifestation in childhood, the virus stays dormant in the nervous system, and gets reactivated to affect a segment of skin called a dermatome. Redness, blisters, itching, and sometimes excruciating pain can all appear together or separately (pain preceding the skin lesions). If caught early, shingles should be treated with oral antivirals 💊 to shorten the disease course and reduce the risk of chronic pain in the area. The linking of the zoster virus with the development of dementia has led to registration of a vaccine for adults 65+. 💉 #skinrash #shingles #zoster #herpes #skinhealth

Remember that shingles occurs in those who had chickenpox but the virus can be spread during episodes of active shingles (usually triggered by stress, other illnesses) to the pediatric and adult population if they are not immune to the varicella zoster virus!
