Teaching students to identify and spell morphemes—the meaningful parts of long words—helps them read more confidently. Drs. Samantha Cooper, Anna Gibbs, and Deborah K. Reed have created resources for instructors and tutors working with Grades 3–5. The final installment in our unit on teaching multimorphemic words was released today! Lesson 5 reviews the suffixes learned in the previously released Lessons 1–4. Tutors and interventionists can use the multiple short activities to reinforce the reading and spelling of multimorphemic words. After just days of Morphology+ training, classroom implementation continues at Creekview Elementary in Middletown City Schools. In this clip, a 3rd grade teacher guides her students through the “10-Finger Summary” strategy, helping students deepen comprehension of their morphology passages. This strategy was introduced to Morphology+ participants on Day 5 of training, when the focus shifted to connecting morphology instruction with reading comprehension. It is exciting to see teachers take what they learn in training and bring it straight into their classrooms. Strategies like this help students strengthen vocabulary, improve comprehension, and build confidence as readers. Thank you to this dedicated Creekview educator and to Terri Vincent, Level 5 IMSE OG Master Instructor, for leading the learning and supporting implementation. Morphology instruction doesn’t have to be complex to be effective. This 4-step routine can be used with any grade level and almost any word list: 1️⃣ Write the words 2️⃣ Identify the base element and any prefixes or suffixes 3️⃣ Write a word sum to show how the word is constructed 4️⃣ Brainstorm additional words that share the same base This routine helps students analyze word structure, connect spelling to meaning, and build vocabulary through patterns—not memorization. Add in a morphology wall like this one for continuous review and practice! Available on TPT and my website! Simple. Repeatable. Research-aligned. #structuredliteracy #scienceofreading #morphology #teacherfollowteachers

English doubles consonants for a reason, but it is not always the same reason. Assimilated prefixes are one of many. Helping students notice assimilated prefixes and understand what they are can make a significant impact on their ability to spell. #iteachgrade1 #iteachgrade2 #iteachthirdgrade #iteachmiddleschool #ScienceOfReading #structuredwordinquiry #TeachersOfInstagram #ReadingStrategies #teachersteachingteachers #morphology #ortongillinghamteachers #teachingspelling

“Should we send leveled texts home for homework with our k-2 kiddos?” That question prompted my immediate response: “NO!” and the creation of these beauties! If our students work so hard to learn to decode, we can’t send home-leveled books to practice! It just goes against the instruction we gave in place at school. That’s why my teachers and I have put together decodable send-home packets. We assess our kiddos at the beginning of the year, pencil in a “roadmap” of the phonics skills we plan to teach, and print off decodables that align with those skills. We typically batch this process and place 10-15 passages in each student’s folder. Then, each week, we paperclip where students should stop. They can read any passages that come before the paperclip. Having students spend just a few minutes each night re-reading their decodable texts can make all the difference. Not to mention, it shows parents HOW we are teaching their kiddo to read! If you want the link for these, drop the word “HOME” below and I will send the link your way!
