Welcome to my second grade classroom for the 2023-2034 school year! This is what my classroom looked like back in August, so it’s definitely not nearly as neat and tidy! SECOND GRADE TIME WORKSHEETS ⏰ One of my favorite activities to begin with when teaching time to the 5-minute is exploring the numbers on a clock! This activity gets students familiar with what each number on a clock means while allowing them to revise skip counting by 5’s. This worksheet is part of my Second Grade Time Worksheet Packet. 3rd Day of 3rd Grade !! 🤩🥳 Not pictures, us playing buzz to skip count by 3 today … I was so impressed with how quickly they caught on to counting by 3s !! We read Counting on Katherine and discussed how even when we have setbacks, if we persevere, we can still achieve our dreams! Then we talked about how goals are just dreams with a plan and created our own math,reading and fun goals. Later we read “Just like Rube Goldberg” before we brainstormed what we want to be when we grow up and how we’ll use math to help us in our future jobs. We talk a lot about how different jobs (even cartoonist!) use math! I have them pick an image on canva of a person in their future career, and then add a picture of their head on top! I print it out and have them glue it to their picture. Also, don’t mind my slide books lol I already passed the books along to other teachers or have them back soooo I didn’t have the hard copy anymore 😅 #thirdgrade #thirddayofthirdgrade #elementary #dayinthirdgrade

It's not enough to memorize- they need conceptual understanding for it to matter. This is one math skill I do not rush in 2nd grade: helping students deeply understand the relationship between addition and subtraction. Using hands-on tools like MathStackers helps students visualize how numbers and operations are connected. Fact families aren’t just about memorizing equations. They help students build relational thinking — an important foundation for multiplication, division, and future problem-solving. When students truly understand how numbers work together, math confidence grows.

It’s that time of year for us to start taking our end of year district assessments! In second grade we don’t state test, but we do have some required end of year assessments. As important as they are, I also want my second graders to feel prepared and confident going into them! ✅ When 2nd grade math is more complicated than you remember. 🤯 Our kids are being taught strategies that we just had to figure out on our own. That means there are a lot of new names and diagrams you never learned! 🚫 But that doesn’t mean these are bad methods, or a waste of time. They are building blocks to give our kids number sense that a lot of us missed out on! 💭 So please try to learn these strategies alongside your student and encourage them to talk through their thought process as they solve them.
