So many students have such a narrow (or limited) understanding of fractions, and it’s often because they’ve only been exposed to the same fraction models over and over again... And this limited view of fractions shows up in FULL FORCE when we start asking students to perform operations with fractions 🤯 If we want students to truly understand fractions, we have to move beyond the “pizza model” of fractions 🍕 I’ll be talking all about this and so much more in my new FREE workshop, Make Fractions Stick! 🎉 If you’re a 3rd-5th grade teacher, I’d love for you to join me and learn how to help your students truly retain what they’re learning about fractions by making fractions visible. In this LIVE workshop, you’ll learn: ➕ The #1 reason why fractions aren’t sticking and what you can do about it ➕ How to make fractions visible in a way that integrates with your math curriculum ➕ The tools and strategies that best support ALL students’ learning needs Comment WORKSHOP and I’ll send you the link to save your spot!👇 #3rdgrademath #4thgrademath #5thgrademath #teachersofig

Comment “MAT” for the link to 100+ math mats perfect for 2nd-3rd grade 💕 Yall the standard algorithm is so abstract so I break it down for my kiddos so they can understand the why behind regrouping. If not, they will just be following a bunch of steps and have no clue why they are doing what they are doing. #iteachthird #iteachsecond #tpt #elementarymath #mathteacher

I use these math mats for my small group, tutorials and take home folder for extra practice at home. Goal is to have kiddos understand the “why” behind multiplication versus just memorizing facts. Of course we want them to get their fact fluency down but also be able to figure out a multiplication ◡̈ Comment “Math Mats” for the link to over 100 mats for 2nd-3rd grade skills.

How do you get students to master their multiplication facts
17,670

How do you get students to master their multiplication facts? We cannot begin to tell you how many times we get asked this question and relevantly so because multiplication is the foundational skill for division, fractions, integer operations, Algebra and all future math following. When we were in school while we learned that multiplication is: “An operation that represents repeated addition of the same number”, or as our primary students would share: “When you take one number and add it to another number a number of times”. We have to be honest when we say memorization and rote memory was a huge push for mastering multiplication facts. Fast forward to today, the education focus is more on building a growth mindset and conceptual understanding which is a must and as Educators we are here for it… But why not use both? Rote memory through practice and repetition builds patterns which ultimately lead us to the strategies we commonly use like: ✅Repeated Addition ✅Skip Counting ✅Creating Equal Groups ✅Using Number Lines ✅Setting Up Arrays So what are we trying to say here? Our answer, students should be given the opportunity to learn their multiplication facts through conceptual strategies and recall their multiplication facts in conjunction with memorizing/recalling strategies. ♥️💙 Did you found this 3’s math hack helpful? ♥️Like, 💬Comment and 🗣️ Share this reel with a friend! #MathAMatics #MathIsFun #TimesTables #MathTutor #Multiplication #AvoidSummerSlide #MathFacts #MathReview #Multiplication #3rdGradeMath #4thGrade #5thGradeMath #6thGradeMath #MathHelp #mathtricks #MathHacks #HoustonMathTutors #DallasMathTutors #ElementaryMath #MiddleSchoolMathTutors #MathCoaches #AlgebraTutors #GeometryTutors #LearnOnInstagram

They got to compete against each other and work with their team to be the first group finished, with accurate answers of course! Would also be great for other operations too! ✖️➕➗➖ ✨ Inspired by @teacherfact ✨ #teacher #teach #multiplication #multiplicationgames #classroomactivities #classroomideas #teachingmath #math #school #education #teachergram #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #igteacher #instateacher #mathteacher

When you ask students to “show their work,” they don’t alway
5,870

When you ask students to “show their work,” they don’t always know what that means. Sometimes you get what they actually thought about while working and other times you get... ❓ Word for word copying of a word problem. ❓ Writing or drawing extra things on their paper because they want to show as many things as possible. ❓ Copying an example down. .... And none of these are helpful when you’re trying to understand students’ thinking. That’s why one of the first lessons I like to do in math each year is about showing your work! Here’s how I do it: 1️⃣ Have students brainstorm different ways they can show how to solve a problem in math. 2️⃣ Gather students and have them share the methods they came up with. 3️⃣ Create an anchor chart together! It’s even better if the students are able to actually write on the chart. 😉 4️⃣ Keep the anchor chart up all year, add to it as students learn new strategies, and refer to it often!
