3rd Day of 3rd Grade !! 🤩🥳 Not pictures, us playing buzz to skip count by 3 today … I was so impressed with how quickly they caught on to counting by 3s !! We read Counting on Katherine and discussed how even when we have setbacks, if we persevere, we can still achieve our dreams! Then we talked about how goals are just dreams with a plan and created our own math, reading and fun goals. Later we read “Just like Rube Goldberg” before we brainstormed what we want to be when we grow up and how we’ll use math to help us in our future jobs. We talk a lot about how different jobs (even cartoonist!) use math! I have them pick an image on canva of a person in their future career, and then add a picture of their head on top! I print it out and have them glue it to their picture. Also, don’t mind my slide books lol I already passed the books along to other teachers or have them back soooo I didn’t have the hard copy anymore 😅 #thirdgrade #thirddayofthirdgrade #elementary #dayinthirdgrade

Modeling in 3rd grade today! 🥰 I love being a director of PreK to 3, because I get to dip my toes in every part of the reading process! I visited @heyms.martin ‘s class today to model r-controlled syllables as well as interleaved mastery of previous skills. This was their first time experiencing syllable types. Some things I attempted to model here: ✅ Whole group attention ✅ Minimal decor distraction ✅ Intermittent engagement checks ✅ Meaning with decoding We then followed up with multisyllabic dictation. I had such a joyful time! • • • • • #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #iteach #teachingreading #igteachers #teachersofig #kids #education #scienceofreading #teachertips #iteach123 #kindergarten #skills #reading #fyp #read #teacherpd #literacy #teacher #reel #reels #video #videos

From a 3rd grade teacher perspective… 1. Third grade is a major shift. Academic demands, independence, and emotional expectations rise quickly. Struggles often surface not because something is “wrong,” but because the bar moved. 2. Keep reading together. The idea that kids “learn to read” only in K–2 isn’t fully accurate. Phonics, language, grammar, and comprehension become more complex in third grade, and rules don’t always work the way they used to. Reading together helps model lifelong reading, builds understanding, and allows you to quietly notice gaps. 3. Practice simple conversation skills. Friendships rely more on talking now, not just playing. Practice prompts like “Can I sit here?” or “Do you want to play ___?” Model listening, turn-taking, and asking follow-up questions. These small skills go a long way. 4. Support social-emotional awareness. Social dynamics feel bigger this year. What looks like “drama” is often kids learning communication, boundaries, and empathy. Talk about healthy vs. hurtful friendships, including exclusion, triangulation, and relational aggression, so children can name what feels supportive and what doesn’t. 5. Protect sleep — it’s foundational. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 8–10 year olds need about 9–12 hours of sleep per night. Exhaustion often shows up as irritability, anxiety, impulsivity, or difficulty focusing. Consistent routines and screen-free nights make a noticeable difference at school. 6. Be intentional with screen time and delay phones/social media when possible. Many third graders already talk about phones, late-night screens, and content they didn’t mean to see. Fast-paced media trains the brain for instant gratification, making focus, frustration tolerance, reading stamina, and peer patience harder. Clear limits and ongoing conversations support developing brains. 7. Communicate early with your child’s teacher. Reach out if your child feels overwhelmed or seems to be falling behind. Schools can screen academics, speech/language, and social-emotional skills and offer supports. The goal is a safety net of trusted adults your child feels comfortable turning to. #3rdgrade #teachergram #parenting

This is a typical day in my 3rd grade classroom! Let me know if you have any questions! 👇🏼 #iteachtoo #3rdgradeteacher #teachertips

Year 6 in 3rd grade & here's what we did! 👇 1. Lots of routines & expectations! We read the book "Our Class is a Family" and went over our classroom rules. I explain to students what a contract is, and they all sign our class contract. 2. Class Family Word Search-- students LOVE seeing theirs and their classmates' names in a word search! We also practice our morning routine. 3. Saving Fred is always a MUST in 3rd grade! Before completing the challenge, we discussed group work expectations and made this anchor chart. Then, students work together to save Fred, who accidentally tipped his boat and wasn't wearing his life preserver! Using paper clips, students get Fred in his life preserver and back in his boat. 4. We read one of my FAVORITE books, Each Kindness. The book talks about how kindness is like a ripple that spreads put. We discuss the importance of kindness in our classroom and school. Then, students wrote 3 ways they can show kindness at school and do the kindness water color. (This is a free resource I downloaded a few years ago, but I don't remember from where, sorry 🙈) Questions on any of this? Or about BTS in general? If you’ve been around here for awhile you’ll know my upcoming 3rd grader loves all things math, engineering, and drawing so I’ve got a few new things for him to try this year and I hope he likes it! If not, don’t worry, I’ve got a back up plan. 😂 Comment 3rd GRADE and I’ll send you a DM with my latest blog post and all our 3rd grade curriculum links + all my thoughts on what we’ll be using. 🫶🏻

Back with some more third grade! ☺️ 3rd grade is in transition right now working with prefixes, suffixes, and overall syllabication. I never like to share perfection on social media, so you’ll even notice I tripped up on my words a bit at one point. I’m so proud of my third grade team for embracing explicit instruction and the Sonday program. It’s all about the energy we bring to it! • • • • • #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #iteach #teachingreading #igteachers #teachersofig #kids #education #scienceofreading #teachertips #iteach123 #kindergarten #skills #reading #fyp #read #teacherpd #literacy #teacher #reels #video #vid #vidgram
