✨LET’S PLAN A 3RD GRADE READING LESSON WITH SCIENCE OF READI

✨LET’S PLAN A 3RD GRADE READING LESSON WITH SCIENCE OF READING SKILLS✨ I’m going to be straight-up honest. I used to go over the vocabulary words in a text briefly and go right into the reading, hoping that I had time to dedicate to word patterns later in the ELA block. I’ll bet you can guess how that went. The lesson more often than not ran long and I had to skip word work and teaching word solving skills. If you missed how I teach a whole group third grade reading lesson using an “I do, we do, you do” approach, make sure to go back a few posts and check it out. I go into a lot of detail about how I setup the entire ELA block. This is a follow-up reel to show how I would set students up for success with practicing a standard by incorporating word solving strategies into the lesson before they go off to work. In third grade, I focus on multisyllabic word solving strategies by marking the vowels and splitting the syllables to solve each part easier. I also pull out any heart words, or words with irregular sound spelling that students need to learn and know by “heart.” While the focus is on comprehension skills from the standards, supporting students with word solving skills before hands can help make the skill easier to practice and master. I’d love to know how you teach word solving skills. Do you teach word work as part of the lesson, or independently at another time? #teacherlesson #teacherideas #scienceofreading #readingteacher #thirdgradeteachers

How I turn all students into grade-level readers—in under 10

How I turn all students into grade-level readers—in under 10 minutes a day. Yes, even the ones who “aren’t ready.” Yes, even when time is tight. Yes, even with the text you already have. It’s all about shared reading—but not the way you learned it in college. This routine is short, powerful, and incredibly intentional. In just 10 minutes a day, I guide my class through:    •   Rich, engaging grade-level texts    •   Daily repetition that builds fluency + confidence    •   Word work + phonics that are embedded, not “extra”    •   Strategic teacher modeling that boosts comprehension for every learner You don’t need a whole new curriculum. You need a system that works with your students, not around them. Drop “READ” in the comments and I’ll DM you my self-paced PD that shows you how to do this with any text—plus you’ll get 5 days of scripted lessons, videos, and real classroom examples to follow. This is the system that changed everything for my readers—and I know it can do the same for yours. Let’s make shared reading your most powerful 10 minutes of the day. #TeachersOfInstagram #ReadingTeacher #SharedReading #ElementaryTeacher #TeacherTikTok #PrimaryTeacher #TeachingReading #TeacherHack #FirstGradeTeacher #LiteracyMatters #TeachItReal #ScienceOfReading #PhonicsFun #TeacherWin #SimpleTeachingStrategies #WhatTeachersNeed #TeachingTips #EngagedLearners #ReadAloudMagic #TeachSmarterNotHarder

Modeling in 3rd grade today! 🥰 I love being a director of PreK to 3, because I get to dip my toes in every part of the reading process! I visited @heyms.martin ‘s class today to model r-controlled syllables as well as interleaved mastery of previous skills. This was their first time experiencing syllable types. Some things I attempted to model here: ✅ Whole group attention ✅ Minimal decor distraction ✅ Intermittent engagement checks ✅ Meaning with decoding We then followed up with multisyllabic dictation. I had such a joyful time! • • • • • #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #iteach #teachingreading #igteachers #teachersofig #kids #education #scienceofreading #teachertips #iteach123 #kindergarten #skills #reading #fyp #read #teacherpd #literacy #teacher #reel #reels #video #videos

Should we be teaching decoding strategies in 3rd grade and up??? If so, what should phonics instruction look like in third, fourth, fifth grade? Approximately 40% of our nation’s third graders are not reading proficiently. This means that YES, we should definitely be teaching our kids HOW to decode the longer, more complex words that they are coming into contact with! Advanced phonics instruction…meaning suffixes, prefixes, word structure, phonology, orthography, complex syllables types, division patterns, syllable stress, all of it should still be practiced, reviewed and taught in 3rd and up! If kids are not reading proficiently, they need explicit instruction to help them do so regardless of their age or grade level. Say it with me….👇🏼 Together, we WILL kick #illiteracy’s ass, one #structuredliteracy lesson at a time! 🙌🏼👊🏻 I love you ALL! Let me know your thoughts!
