People in Metro Detroit will soon have to dial all 10 digits when making local calls. The Michigan Public Service Commission says the change begins October 7, 2025. After that date, any call within the 313 area will need the area code plus the number. Seven-digit calls will no longer go through, even if the person you’re calling is nearby. The switch is happening because 313 numbers are running out. The 313 code has been in use since 1947, but nearly every number has been taken. To meet demand, the state approved a new 679 area code. Both 313 and 679 will cover the same places: Detroit, Allen Park, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Ecorse, the Grosse Pointes, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Inkster, Lincoln Park, Redford Township, River Rouge, Taylor, and more.

Did you know that ZIP codes were implemented only as recently as 1963? The ZIP code system was implemented in the United States in 1963 as part of the Zone Improvement Plan aka ZIP, aimed at improving the efficiency of mail delivery in response to the nations growing population and the increasing volume of mail. Prior to this system, postal workers had to rely on local knowledge to sort and deliver mail, a process that became increasingly impractical and inefficient with urban and suburban expansion. The introduction of five-digit ZIP codes, and later the addition of the ZIP+4 codes in 1983, revolutionized the postal service by automating sorting processes and significantly speeding up mail distribution nationwide. #history #60s #historyfacts #didyouknow #interesting #60sstyle #60svintage #innovation #americanhistory #interestingfacts #vintage #historybuff #backintheday #nostalgia #1960s #historylovers #historical
