As “Rid of Me” by PJ Harvey came out in 1993, a lot of critics genuinely hated how it sounded. Produced by Steve Albini, the record rejected almost every polished studio standard of the early 90s. Albini avoided heavy compression, studio layering, and what Kurt Cobain later described as “studio trickery,” instead making the songs feel loud, physical, uncomfortable, and painfully close. Some reviewers mocked the album for sounding like it was “recorded in somebody’s basement,” while others thought the production felt unfinished or even broken. But that exact ugliness is what caught Cobain’s attention. After the massive success of Nevermind, Cobain had grown tired of what Albini himself called its “very controlled, compressed radio-friendly mix.” He wanted Nirvana’s next album to sound less commercial and more exposed, something raw enough to feel almost invasive. That led directly to Albini producing In Utero in 1993, where vocals were often left without double tracking, drums sounded harsh and room-heavy, and imperfections were intentionally kept in the final mixes. The label reportedly panicked after hearing the recordings, with some people believing the album was practically “unreleasable” because of how abrasive it sounded. Ironically, that became the entire identity of In Utero. What critics once dismissed as ugly production on Rid of Me ended up redefining alternative rock, proving that emotional intensity could matter more than perfection, polish, or radio appeal.
