I've been asked how I polish my abalone shells. All I really do is rub them with some food grade mineral oil. It brings out the beautiful colors, gives them a polished look, and is non-toxic. I have never tried scrubbing or brushing abalone as I've read that abalone shell dust is toxic. *Side note- this much mineral oil isn't necessary.
