When I watched that scene in When Life Gives You Tangerines when Ae-Sun was given the most precious grilled abalones by her dying haenyo mother, I knew the next sobering scene was coming. I joked right before the cut to the next scene as she reluctantly ate those hard-earned abalones, “the world’s most expensive abalones”. This is a meal salted by not just the sea, but by sweat and tears. I asked my husband on this trip while driving on the road to our next destination, “Is there something wrong with how life is? Not all of us are super well off, but many of us in Singapore are. And yet we are so unhappy, snappy, and obsessed with money. Do we not have enough?” As I eat another grilled abalone and savour its flavour, life can be so much harder for many of us, but why are we not enjoying it? Am I enjoying the life I have fully, and gratefully? What a privilege it is to not have to shed tears of pain while eating a bowl of abalone porridge or a hot plate of grilled abalones. What a privilege it is to know the next bowl is a luxury I can still afford. This biggest luxury yet is living like we are alive and human in a world which rewards us for behaving like dispensable robots. #jeju #grilledabalones #whenlifegivesyoutangerines

Korean folk wisdom says female abalones have softer flesh and therefore are better suited for steamed dishes, and male abalones have firmer flesh and therefore are better eaten fresh or grilled. I have not been able to buy enough abalones to experiment and verify this folk wisdom, but I’d love to know if you can taste a difference! Also, check out my new black plates! 😎 I visited a big store for professional chefs in Korea, and bought a bunch of things including these gorgeous black plates. 🛍️

Abalones are much more than just beautiful shells; they're a fascinating type of marine snail with a unique place in the ocean. These remarkable mollusks are easily recognized by their low, spiral-shaped shell that has a row of respiratory pores along the outer edge. The inside of their shell is a shimmering rainbow of iridescent mother-of-pearl, making them highly prized. In the wild, abalone are herbivores, using their powerful muscular "foot" to cling tightly to rocks and their file-like radula to scrape algae off the surfaces. They play a vital role in their ecosystem, and their presence is often an indicator of a healthy marine environment. In this time-lapse video, you can see an abalone eating digitata algae in our Pacific Northwest tidal exhibit. Abalones are sea snails that are considered specialized herbivores, feeding primarily on algae throughout their lives. Mature adults tend to prefer scraps of kelp. They remain stationary waiting for pieces to drift within reach. Though generally sedentary, abalones will move when seasons change, water quality shifts, or food becomes limited. 📸: Keeper Cora

The Shima Peninsula in Mie Prefecture is home to the largest population of ama divers in Japan. The word ama means “woman of the sea.” The divers catch shellfish, abalones, and sometimes pearls, preserving a deep fishing tradition in Mie that dates back millennia.
