Rappelling on a 6mm rad line it is hard to maintain enough friction for a controlled descent. The method shown above helps us rappel on a single strand and maintain control with extra bends in the rope.

This is the smooth anchor clean I use for sport climbing. → Clip the PAS above the rappel ring to keep the rope clear. → Thread the rope through both chains or the rappel ring. → With the tail, tie a figure eight on a bite and clip it to your belay loop. ⚠️ Lock the carabiner. I prefer an auto locker because it’s faster and removes the “did I lock it?” moment. → Next, untie, pull the tail through, and tie an overhand to keep the tail out of the way. → Clip it to the same carabiner. → Call take, weight the system, unclip the PAS, and lower. ⚠️ Always weight the system before unclipping the PAS. Practice this on the ground with an experienced partner until you feel comfortable. 📙 Save this for your next day on real rock and share 🔁 with a friend.

Rappel safety check: be sure BOTH rope strands are clipped to your carabiner (and why an autoblock does NOT help!) My last post on this caused a few people to ask for a video, so here it is. . For a long time, I thought an autoblock would save your life if you made this mistake. Turns out that is wrong. . If you tie your autoblock, but then clip only strand as shown here, and then load the rope, the autoblock does NOT grab the rope as you might expect. I tested this on fat ropes and skinny ropes, and with several different varieties of hitch cords. Pretty much the same outcome every time. . Try this yourself; in a controlled environment, of course! . ✅ The best way to test your rappel rigging: weight the rope with your tether still attached to the anchor before you commit to it. ✅ Do your partner safety checks as standard procedure. ✅ Don't be complacent, no matter how many rappels you've done in your life. . . . 👍 Was this helpful? The Clove Hitch rappel extension has become our Go-To. Here

The Clove Hitch rappel extension has become our Go-To. Here are a couple considerations. 1: Its LONG This is the "longest" tether you can make with a double length sling. This is super valuable any time there are ledges at your rap stance. The length gives you freedom to move around and utilize the ledge. 2: No Knots to Untie Rappel extensions always tend to get "welded" after a long series of raps. With the clove, you don't have to struggle undoing any stubborn knots at the end of the day! TIP: Use a round stock carabiner like the one shown 3: It Keeps your Rappel Carabiner Oriented The clove works like a little anti-crossloading device, keeping the rap carabiner oriented where you want it.

Clipping the rope into a quickdraw properly is basic stuff, but it’s super important for your safety. Mess this up and the rope can pop out in a fall. ✅ Golden rule (the big one): The rope should ALWAYS run through the carabiner away from the wall. 👀 #feelthelizard 🎬 @juan_goyache #climbingtips #safeclimbing #safetyfirst #fixeclimb

People ask all the time why I belay with a Gigi/ plate style device. It has much less friction than an ATC/ reverso which saves the elbows and shoulders on long multi-pitches. I personally don't like to carry the weight of a second gri gri to belay from the top and also don't like how the gri gri tends to back slip if you don't keep a tight hand on the brake strand. We've already talked about why we don't belay with a micro traxion. . A demonstration of how to properly belay one follower on a multi-pitch with a Gigi. You must clip the carabineer in a way that it prevents rotation. With skinny ropes the carabineer can rotate causing the brake hand and climbers side to become reversed! 😬 You don't need to do this if belaying two ropes at once, can you see why?

Using a Tibloc directly off your harness can be a super efficient and simple way to ascend. Never trust your life to a single ascender, this method requires a "hard" backup, a direct connection from the rope to your harness. A clean way to back yourself up is adding a clove hitch below the device. Just stop every couple meters to tend slack through your clove. Here are a couple more important thoughts with this technique... 1: Only use a "new" style Tibloc... And be careful You should only consider this method with the newer style Tibloc with the plastic engagement spring. Even with the newer device, you should be careful to keep the teeth engaged. It's possible for these devices to "slip" and catch again, potentially damaging your rope 2: This works with any ascender that re-directs the rope While the Tibloc is the lightest option to carry as a back up, it's not the smoothest or only option out there. This technique works with a Micro Traxion, roll n lock, rope man and many others. With any of these devices, you HAVE to maintain a HARD back up and remain directly connected to the rope!
