Painting exaggerated figures - part 1 🌷 I wanted to do something a bit different and decided to paint some exaggerated female figures. First, in order to get some ideas and inspiration, I went through one of the Pinterest boards I had created that had a lot of figurative art saved. I went through hundreds of saved pins to figure out what I liked and how I might want to incorporate aspects into my own work. Then, I got out a 20x24” canvas and put an underpainting of bright red on it. I wanted something bright to be able to let that color peek through from underneath as more and more layers evolve. I decided that I would experiment with three figures in one painting, just to see how it felt, because before I painted just one figure on the same size canvas. I created guidelines for my figures in a few different mediums — colored pencils, paint markers, and China markers. Then, I went in with my paint and just started filling in areas of the figures. I also used more markers to fill in some areas, as well as to give it variety. This isn’t something I’ve done in a long time, so I’m really leaning into playing around and just experimenting with it. Finally found a little moment in the studio this weekend. Love all of the under layers. I love that they are experimental and expressive… I don’t even necessarily stick to the colour brief that was given. Here I can just scribble and use any colour I want.. there is barely any thinking or correcting in this part… my absolute favourite forever!
