I had to show you. It was now or never 🤷🏼‍♂️ Although I normally show you my process from start to finish, I thought I’d show you how paintings start before I paint tiny figures that interact with abstract backgrounds. It’s really as simple as it looks. Pushing bucketloads of paint around on a canvas until it looks good. Although a majority of my paintings are made up of only one colour, they become complex in their own way. The brushstrokes clash with one another and create an effect of movement. Then of course I paint intricately detailed figures using a very fine brush. It’s much harder to do and requires far more time but it’s probably my favourite part because that’s when the artwork comes to life. Here I’m not showing you that part because I haven’t actually painted the figures on it yet. It’s an artwork that will feature horses and their riders performing a series of dressage movements which is probably unexpected given the title of the artwork. ‘Dressage’ is a highly technical equestrian sport whereas ‘Horseplay’ is a very rough and rowdy form of play. The exact opposite. As you’ll see in a couple of weeks when the artwork is completed, the horses and their riders will be in complete control despite the very uncontrolled and erratic movements of the paint in the background. They’re two things that don’t belong together yet they work together so well. Or at least that’s what I hope. I guess we’ll see. 📸 @eugenedavidgrey
