HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF ADDISON’S DISEASE?? That’s the lifelong condition that nearly took Gustavo from us this week. 💔 It happens when the adrenal glands stop making the hormones that keep the body balanced, and when it goes into crisis, it can be fatal in just hours. On Monday, Gustavo suddenly became very sick with nonstop vomiting and diarrhea. When we arrived at Dogwood Emergency, we were told his blood pressure was extremely low, his cortisol level was dangerously low, and he was severely dehydrated. He was in critical condition. The incredible veterinarians there acted quickly, found out what was wrong, and saved his life. ❤️🥹 He is only alive today because of their fast action… and I also believe because of God’s perfect timing. Mondays are usually one of the days we are both gone all day for work, but this week was a holiday and we were home. If we weren’t home on Monday… Gustavo would not be here today! He will now live with Addison’s disease for the rest of his life, but he’s here. He’s home. When I was 10 years old, I was in horrible pain without a known cause. I was poked and prodded, but nothing showed up on the tests or scans. Each doctor I saw couldn’t explain the pain and didn’t believe my pleas for help. They said I was making it up, seeking attention, claimed it was “all in my head.”⁣ ⁣ After 3 years, a doctor finally listened to me. After just fifteen minutes I was finally diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a very real genetic connect tissue disorder with no cure. ⁣ ⁣ The other doctors? They may have received 10 minutes of education on EDS (at most) and failed to recognize a case when it—when I—stood before them. ⁣ ⁣ Fourteen years later, I still live with daily pain. I’ve undergone 12 brain and spinal neurosurgeries to reposition my skull and fuse my entire spine. I’ve gone paralyzed over a dozen times and dislocated almost every joint more times than I could ever count. ⁣ Being RARE with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis, Adrenal Insufficiency, Gastroparesis, Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, and other diseases is awful. I dread going to the ER where doctors aren’t educated about my conditions and can’t provide care when I desperately need it. Finding specialists to manage my rare, chronic illnesses is near impossible. And even when I am under the care of the world’s leading physicians, insurance companies and pharmacies attempt to insert themselves and stand between me and the therapies prescribed by the expert physicians. ⁣ It’s a never ending living nightmare impacting every facet of my life. It’s exhausting. It’s the reality of living with a rare disease. ⁣ Every day is a challenge and I am always fighting. Before Snoopy was diagnosed, I knew nothing about Addison’s disease. As a dog parent, you always think you are keeping your baby safe from everything in the world but when life throws a curveball like this, you are left clueless. Snoopy stopped eating without any apparent reason one day and the next thing we knew, he was shivering and getting worse by the day. From a simple kidney infection to being diagnosed with a rare strain of tick fever, a lot happened in these two months. Snoopy was on fluids on most of these days and despite all our attempts, he was not getting better. After countless tests, vet visits and scans, he was finally diagnosed with Addison’s disease two weeks ago and it was as if everything suddenly started making sense. The imbalance in his electrolytes, the shaking for no reason, and lack of appetite - these were all symptoms of Addison’s disease all along. It was shocking to find that most dog parents and even vets did not know a lot about the disease. As difficult as it was to compile this video from the most difficult phase of my life, I know it is important for me to spread awareness about this rare disease because prior knowledge about this disease can literally save a dog’s life💖 While every dog might show different symptoms, here are the most common ones:- 📌Lethargy and Loss of Appetite 📌Shaking/Shivering 📌Low Sodium and High Potassium 📌Diarrhoea 📌Vomiting 📌Weight Loss 📌Elevated Kidney Values 📌Weakness 📌Dehydration If you dog is showing any of these symptoms and you’ve ruled out all the other reasons out there, Addison’s disease might be the culprit. Once diagnosed, Addison’s disease is a fairly manageable condition and dogs with this disease can live a long and healthy life💕 While we are still learning to live with this disease, we know we are in this for a long run, so you might see more posts related to Addison’s disease in the future.
