Companies such as Meta, Google, and Amazon—alongside fast-growing AI startups like OpenAI and Anthropic—are embarking on an unprecedented AI data center spending spree Collectively, they are projected to invest roughly $630 billion to $700 billion in 2026 alone, a 62% jump from 2025, with total AI-related data-center capital expenditures expected to reach $5.2 trillion by 2030, driven largely by GPUs and energy infrastructure. Meta's $27 billion AI data center is under construction in Richland Parish, Louisiana. But the future of advanced tech is also bringing chaos to residents of the rural county. Fortune AI reporter Sharon Goldman visited the town in February to hear concerns about the data center—and who really wins at the end of it. 🔗 Click the link in the bio to read more.

As the tech industry rushes to power its AI boom, we take a look at some of the impacts of the surge in data center construction. Will the water, energy and land consumption of data centers be offset by jobs and economic benefits? Or will their voracious demands exhaust local resources and leave communities worse off? Oglala Lakota and Northern Cheyenne activist Krystal Two Bulls, the executive director of Indigenous-led environmental justice organization Honor the Earth, shares how massive new data centers are already impacting people's everyday lives. The true cost of AI infrastructure extends far beyond data centers themselves. The real burden comes in the form of noise, light pollution, air pollution, water scarcity, and water contamination affecting surrounding communities. More Perfect Union reported on this back in March of last year. #ai #datacenters #investing #trading #stockmarket

Yesterday I visited one of the biggest data centers in Europe! 🌍 Microsoft’s Dublin data center powers cloud services and AI services for businesses, governments and organisations across Ireland, the UK and much of Northern Europe. Hyperscale data centers like this one can host tens of thousands, and sometimes even hundreds of thousands of servers! What I found insane wasn’t actually the number of servers, it was the huge amount of infrastructure (power, cooling, etc) that helps to keep this data center running. Thanks to @microsoft for inviting me on the tour! ❤️

Would you wanna live next to this? Residents in Vineland say construction of a 300-megawatt, 2.5 million square foot AI data center is driving them nuts, reporting a loud hum coming from the area where DataOne is building a data center under a contract with Microsoft. AI data center projects across New Jersey are under the microscope now for their heavy power and water use, which is driving up utility costs here and around the country. At a recent community meeting about the project, a DataOne rep told skeptical residents the new data center, expected to be up and running this year, was powered by clean energy and would not use “one single drop of water” from the local supply. ✍️ @spsulliv 🎥 Courtesy Scott Montgomery #ai #datacenters #newjersey

AI itself doesn’t “drink” water, but the data centers that run AI models use water mainly for cooling servers. Here’s the breakdown: 1. Data center cooling Large servers generate a lot of heat. Many facilities use water-based cooling systems (like cooling towers) to keep equipment from overheating. That’s where most water use comes from. 2. Electricity production AI requires electricity, and power plants (especially fossil fuel and nuclear plants) also use water for cooling. So part of AI’s water footprint is indirect, tied to energy generation. How much are we talking about? Exact numbers vary by location, energy mix, and infrastructure, but estimates suggest: • Training a very large AI model can require hundreds of thousands to several million liters of water, depending on duration and cooling systems. • A single AI query uses a very small amount individually, but at massive scale (millions or billions of queries), total water use adds up. It’s important to note: • Not all data centers use the same cooling methods. • Some companies are shifting to air cooling, recycled water, or locating centers in cooler climates to reduce usage. • Water use varies significantly by region. So AI’s water footprint is real, but it’s tied to broader infrastructure choices like energy sources and cooling technology—not the software alone. #AI #DataCenters #WaterUsage #TechInfrastructure #Sustainability

Recent research shows that AI and data centers are indeed using huge amounts of water for cooling, but the numbers vary widely because companies rarely disclose usage. One study estimates AI‑related systems could use between 312 billion and 764 billion liters of fresh water annually as of 2025, mostly for cooling server heat and generating electricity, with projections rising as AI demand grows. These figures are broad estimates, not precise measurements. Water use comes in two parts: direct cooling water drawn and evaporated at data centers, and indirect water use for power generation that supplies them. While some water is drawn from rivers or groundwater and lost to evaporation, new technologies and non‑potable water reuse aim to cut this footprint, though concerns remain in water‑stressed regions where rapid data center buildouts may strain local supplies. Amazon’s biggest AI data center is now operational in Indiana, with half a million AWS Trainium 2 chips entirely devoted to powering OpenAI rival Anthropic. Just over a year ago, it was nothing but cornfields. Once complete, 30 buildings will consume 2.2 gigawatts of power there. CNBC talked to AWS CEO Matt Garman about the project, and went to New Carlisle, Indiana, to ask locals about the impact — and for a first ever on-camera tour inside the largest cluster of non-Nvidia chips in the world. Living near massive data centers might sound like living near the future — but for many communities, it also means living with the hidden costs of the digital world. As companies like Meta Platforms scale AI infrastructure, the conversation is shifting from just innovation to impact: energy consumption, water usage for cooling, noise, and environmental strain on local communities. The AI boom isn’t just happening in the cloud — it’s happening in real neighborhoods with real trade-offs. As demand for compute explodes, balancing technological progress with sustainability and community well-being will become one of the biggest challenges of the next decade. ⚖️ Progress always has a price — the question is who pays it.
