What is the alphabetic principle? Read below! ⏬⏬⏬ It’s the understanding of the relationship between written letters and spoken sounds. 🎉 🍎 How do we build this understanding? By teaching sounds & spellings using explicit, systematic instruction following a quality scope & sequence. 🍎 As you begin teaching these relationships, it’s important to continually review them. Here are the two drills I modeled in the video: 1. Phoneme Drill- Using a card deck of previously taught graphemes, show cards quickly and have the reader produce the phoneme. (Also known as a visual drill if you follow an OG approach.) 2. Grapheme Drill- Using a list of previously taught spellings, call out the phoneme and the student will write down all the graphemes that can be used to represent that sound. (Also known as the auditory drill if you follow an OG approach.) If you need a card deck, I have one available in my TpT store. It contains the most common graphemes taught in grades K-2.
