Andrew Lloyd Weber was 76 on 22 March – knight, peer, winner of 6 Tonys, 3 Grammys, an Oscar, a Golden Globe a Kennedy Centre Honour & apparently ‘the single wealthiest maker of music on this planet, 1 spot ahead of Paul McCartney’ An eccentric childhood on the top-floor mansion flat in Kensington. His g’father, a plumber with a passion for organ music, his musically gifted father became a professor of composition at the Royal College of Music. His mother Jean a Gypsy Rose Lee ‘determined that I should be a prodigy in something or other’ Hypnotised by South Pacific & Jailhouse Rock, he won a scholarship to Westminster where he infuriated teachers with his admiration of Victorian architecture & Puccini. At 17, Magdalen College, Oxford, but only for a yr when 20-yr-old Tim Rice offered himself as lyricist. The result - Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar & Evita. Thus the West End & Broadway played host to the indestructible blockbuster. He became the only person to have equalled the record set by Rodgers & Hammerstein with 4 Broadway shows By the age of 25 he had bought Sydmonton Court, his eclectic Hampshire mansion loved even by Pevsner. In 1981, Milos Forman approached him about playing Mozart in Amadeus. ALW confessed he was a hopeless actor but Forman was undeterred ‘You are a hot-headed perfectionist who can be extremely obnoxious. I want you to play yourself’’ ALW tells the story against himself in his memoir Unmasked. The 478pages only take him to 1986 & the 1st performance of Phantom. Another triumph His Requiem in honour of his father William is a great favourite. The magnificently moving Pei Jesu was sung at our wedding. With his 3rd wife, a champion of the Sport of Kings – they joined the royal procession at Asc’t in 2023. He was commissioned by CRIII to write an anthem for the coronation – based on Psalm 98 ‘O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvellous things’ So has Andrew Lloyd Webber.
