Reasons to get an Anki remote: 1) It’s cute :) they even come in Barbie pink! 2) It’s fun. Doing lots of Anki reviews is not always the most entertaining. Having a remote keeps my hands occupied and helps me stay focused. 3) Perhaps mort importantly, using an Anki remote can help you speed up your reviews. It used to take me a long time to select again vs hard/good/easy on my keyboard, and my time per card was well over 7 seconds. But now, I can click a separate button to control each of these options. This definitely made a huge difference. I can do more reviews, and I also have more time for practice problems because of it! Three simple tips to build speed with Anki (while still learning a lot!) 1: Getting an Anki remote is a huge game changer. I am able to basically control all the needed Anki functions just by touch. My Anki remote tutorial is pinned in my Instagram profile. 2. I pretty much only use cards that are cloze deletions/image occlusions. I read that this is the best format to maximize both efficiency and retention. I also started using only premade Anki decks. Not only do I save time by not having to make the cards myself, but I am using cards that have been used and vetted by thousands of other students. I use the AnKing deck/Ankihub, and the MileDown deck is excellent for the MCAT. Of course, this is personal to me only-many med students make their own cards as they find this helps them! 3. The one thing I am super strict about with studying is doing my Anki reviews, 7 days a week (during the school year). The more familiar I am with the Anki cards, the less time it takes to get through each one, and the more reviews I can accomplish. When I started with Anki as a sophomore in college, my time per card was around 7.5 seconds per card. After making these three changes over the past 3 years, I’ve been able to drop my time per card down to around 4 seconds or less. It took time and effort to get where I am today, but because Anki is really helpful for my learning, it’s worth it for me. Drop your other Anki questions in the comments!

The key to effective learning is active recall, meaning you should force yourself to think of the answer before looking at it. If you see the question and immediately recognize the answer, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve mastered it—it just means it looks familiar. Instead, try covering the answer and forcing yourself to recall every step of the concept before checking if you’re right. If you struggle, don’t just move on; take a moment to truly understand why you got it wrong before continuing. 2️⃣ Keep Cards Short & Simple, but Think Deeper 🔍 Anki is most effective when your flashcards contain concise, high-yield information. Long, cluttered cards with excessive details make reviews overwhelming and ineffective. Instead of writing out full explanations, break concepts into bite-sized pieces—one fact per card. However, while the card itself should be simple, your thought process shouldn’t be. Before flipping to see the answer, challenge yourself to go one or two steps deeper than what’s written. For example, if your card asks, “What enzyme is deficient in McArdle’s disease?” and you answer “Myophosphorylase,” take it a step further—what does this enzyme do? What are the key symptoms of McArdle’s disease? This method of second- and third-order thinking trains you to make deeper connections and prepares you for the way concepts will be tested in exams. 3️⃣ Leverage Images & Mnemonics 🧠 Your brain remembers visuals and associations far better than plain text. Studies show that pairing information with an image enhances recall, so whenever possible, use diagrams, charts, or even doodles to reinforce concepts.
