They told the architect his design was impossible. He built it anyway. And it became the most recognizable building on Earth. ⠀ The Sydney Opera House wasn’t just controversial — it almost never happened. ⠀ Jørn Utzon was a virtually unknown Danish architect when he won the design competition in 1957. The judges pulled his entry from the rejected pile. One of them called it the only design worth building. ⠀ Nobody knew how to actually construct those iconic shell-shaped roofs. The engineering didn’t exist yet. ⠀ Utzon spent years solving a problem that had never been solved before — eventually realizing every shell could be cut from the surface of a single sphere. That breakthrough saved the entire project. ⠀ Construction took 14 years. The budget blew out from $7 million to $102 million. ⠀ The politics got so ugly that Utzon was forced off the project before it was finished. He never saw the completed building in person. ⠀ It opened in 1973.
