Anthropomorphization is the process of assigning human qualities to #animals. So, to my human brain it always looks like #morayeels are yelling at their losing sports team on the TV but actually they're just moving water over their #gills so they can absorb the oxygen molecules therein (aka "breathing"). What else do they remind you of? (Also, anyone quoting that Dean Martin song in the comments is getting banned.)

From above, Moray reads like a language the Incas left behind for us to decipher. These circular terraces weren’t built for beauty, though beauty is exactly what they became. Each ring drops a few degrees cooler than the one above it, a sophisticated agricultural laboratory carved into the Andean earth long before the word “innovation” existed. From the air, the symmetry is breathtaking. Concentric, deliberate, impossibly precise against the mountains and that wide Andean sky. A Giant Moray captures an unfortunate Squirrelfish while hunting at night off the island of Misool. Filmed by John Roney 🎥: @roneydives I’ll never forget this night dive. I had prepped my macro lens, with the hopes to film small cephalopods and comb jellies, but within the first 20 minutes of the dive I’d already encountered all sorts of giant marine life. From multiple Black-Tip Reef Sharks, a passing Hawksbill Turtle (which would usually be sleeping), and finally this seven foot (2m) Giant Moray Eel. The eel nearly brushed me as it passed by, checking under rocks for hiding prey. I slowly followed at a distance until I finally captured the moment that the massive eel caught a Squirrelfish. I love the way it retreats back into its den to eat its kill. You never know what’s lurking in the shadows 👀 In the darkest caves and crevices of a coral reef, you may encounter the moray eel. Behind their spooky, ghostly grins is more than meets the eye. Morays actually have two sets of razor-sharp teeth, including a unique second set of jaws deep inside their throat that can shoot forward to grasp prey. Shrimp however, are spared. Like loyal spirits they crawl into the eels’ mouths to cleanse them of parasites, all while evading becoming a midnight snack. In some cases however, they can be more of a nuisance than a help.
