ENG — Over the past weeks, I’ve been painting small watercolor eye studies to better understand how watercolor behaves — how pigment moves, edges soften, and colors mix on the paper. Eyes are perfect for practicing this balance between softness and sharpness, between letting go of control and deciding where detail belongs. In this study, I focused on wet-on-wet skin tones, soft edges around the eye, and keeping the iris as the focal point through contrast and reflection. . . #watercolorstudy #watercolorpainting #artistprocess #eyestudy #artpractice

Perfection has a way of taking over if you let it. You start with something loose and honest, and somewhere along the way you try to control it into being “right.” That’s usually when it loses its voice. The brushstrokes tighten up. The colors get safe. The painting starts to feel forced. I’ve been learning to let a piece be what it wants instead of what I planned. To leave the unexpected marks. To trust the direction it’s going, even if it’s not what I had in mind. Not every painting needs to be polished. Some just need to be left alone. ENG — This one was harder than it looks. I really struggled to let go while working on this wet-on-wet watercolor eye study — everything felt more tense and less natural than usual. I’m wondering if it’s connected to not sleeping enough last night, or maybe just mood or hormones. Watercolor feels so sensitive to my state of mind, especially when I have to trust the water and the pigment instead of trying to control them. Some days the paint flows easily, and other days I feel like I’m fighting it the whole time. Out of curiosity — do other watercolor artists notice this too 😋? . . . #watercolorstudy #watercolorpainting #artistprocess #artpractice #eyestudy

If you can’t afford my work right now, here’s what I accept as payment: - trading artworks - teaching me a technique I don’t know - English lessons - a place to stay when I’m passing through your city - ideas I wouldn’t even think to ask for - a photoshoot of my work or an artist portrait - a text or article about my practice - advice I can reuse a hundred times Not everything has to be a transaction. Sometimes it’s an exchange. #contemporaryart #artpractice #artistlife #newmediaart

ENG — Over the past weeks of painting watercolor eye studies, I’ve realized how much water control affects everything — softness, edges, and color mixing. These are three small habits I keep coming back to:
watching the paper surface (to know how much water my paper has absorbed), removing excess water from the brush, and testing the stroke before touching the painting. They seem simple, but they make watercolor much more predictable 😊 and help me decide where softness or sharpness should happen.
This small head study exercise completely changed how I understand likeness in portraits. When I first started doing these tiny three inch studies, I struggled a lot. They were frustrating, uncomfortable, and honestly embarrassing at times. I even remember struggling through them at a workshop while everyone else seemed to get it. As hard as that was, it ended up showing me exactly what I needed to focus on. I was not thinking enough about the overall structure of the head. I was getting lost in details instead of understanding the form. When I got home, I committed to practicing these small studies every day. Over time, something clicked. The head stopped feeling complex and overwhelming. It became simple and understandable. That shift alone improved my portraits more than almost anything else I have done. What you are watching here is actually a self portrait done using that same exercise. Small, fast studies like this force you to focus on structure, and once you understand that, getting a likeness becomes much easier. #portraitpainting #oilpainting #artpractice #paintingprocess #paintcoachstudio

Just 2 PAINTS This sky was painted with only two PAINTS. Glacier Blue and Perelyne Violet. That’s it. No secret third mix hiding somewhere off camera. When you lean Glacier Blue a little heavier, the sky breathes cooler and lighter. When you let Perelyne Violet take the lead, it deepens and shifts into something moodier. Just two PAINTS. Completely different feelings. That’s the power of understanding your mixes instead of chasing more tubes. As a watercolor artist, I’ve learned the challenge isn’t having more options. It’s knowing your options well. When you limit yourself, you start seeing temperature shifts, subtle value changes, and all those in-between hues most people miss. You don’t need more colors. You need more control. 🎨 Follow to start thinking different about your art. #arttips #paintingtips #arteducation #artpractice #creativeprocess

The sky only needs a few marks to begin holding stars. Tonight’s Art of 25 Marks came at dusk. I reached for my soft pastels and just…began. And in those simple 25 marks the horizon softened, the blue deepened, and somewhere in the making, the stars appeared, like they’d been waiting there all along. That’s the magic of this little practice. It doesn’t ask much. Only that you show up and make marks. I think that’s what I love most about it. If you’d like to join in tonight, here’s all it takes: ∙ 25 marks, any medium, any subject ∙ Make something, then share it ∙ Tag me in it so we can find each other and use the hashtag #theartof25marks That’s it. A small creative ritual, shared among people who still believe in the magic of making things by hand. You are entirely welcome here. 💕 Art Journal: @maggiejanestudio Soft Pastels: @earthberrypastels.eng @blueearthpastels #artpractice #artchallenge #artistsofinstagram #artjournalcommunity
