SUPPORTING STUDENT INDEPENDENCE 📚 One thing I am very passionate about is students INDEPENDENTLY completing work and building ✨️ RESILIENCE ✨️ I understand that for some teachers, sitting one-on-one with students is the easiest and quickest way to get student assessment/ work completed. In a way, that is great. However, students grow a dependence on requiring an adult to always do their work for them and requiring their work to be "perfect." It's important for teachers to have high expectations of our kids. Yes, I still provide a bit of scaffolding to my kiddos, but that is to help them get STARTED. I have found that I am not having to split my body into a million pieces to try and get to everyone to get work completed, and my kiddos are actually really proud of completing work themselves! Some key things I do: ✨️ Co- construct work examples before starting assessment and display them where students can see and access it! ✨️ Complete a planning sheet! This helps gets their main ideas down and supports them to create paragraphs when we get into the final copy. ✨️ Create a "working board" - this is a slide I make and have it displayed at the front. It will have prompting questions, key words, a scaffolded paragraph structure etc. This, I have found, really helps in getting the kids STARTED! Some kids will have a go writing without the scaffold, but at least the scaffolded paragraph allows kids to start and keeps them on task. This allows me to get to kids who really need my help. ✨️For my kiddos who need extra support, I will scribe their ideas on a mini whiteboard, and they will copy this onto their assessment sheet. These students are still getting the support they need, but they are also being held accountable for completing their work. ✨️ Have a "focused work" timer - this is a timer I put on the board, and tell them they have x amount minutes of focused work. This is time for them to solely focus on completing their independent task.
