Of course I'm going to love them, they're in the same family as chrysanthemums 🌸 These beautiful Asters filled the gap just before my main chrysanthemum crop bloomed. Tip 🌱: I have found here that I get one good cut like in the video. They will push out more stems, but I found they are fairly weak and short after the main harvest. Tip 🌱: You can harvest the individual stems, they are just very slim. I will be trialing my asters in a new spot in the garden this year to see if i can get an extra few inches out of the individual stem length. Advanced Grower Tip 🌱: If the plants are exposed to around 5 weeks of long days in their first weeks of growing (14hrs sun), they will produce more blooms on longer stems. I am going to play around with timings and see when is best to plant here, but it will be around December that I'm aiming for them to be in ground. #asters #asterladycorallavender #flowers #cutflowers #seasonalflowers #farmerflorist #urbangarden #gardening #garden #diygarden

This beautiful Autumn morning light. I can’t resist just wandering the garden and it’s not so early anymore. Sometimes I’m asked how the garden was planned and I’d have to say on mornings like this you feel so connected to the place that ideas and imagining just come so easily. At the moment as every Autumn I’m in love with Asters. I know they have various new names now but I’ve always loved them and they will always be Asters to me. #asters #autumnmood #autumngarden #newzealandgarden #akaroanewzealand

There are so many native asters in lots of colours (white, pink, yellow, purple, blue) and light conditions. Asters generally bloom September and October, providing beautiful fall blooms. And once you have one plant, you’ll have the opportunity to have many plants. Save a few seeds and sprinkle them on top of a container and once they germinate in spring, you can water and tend to - and have a gorgeous display for fall. AND THEN you can plant them in the ground afterwards. Fall mums have a replacement ready, you just need to take the plunge. I LOVE YOUR ASTERS! #asters #fallflowers #nativeplants #nativeplants #zone6b #perennialgarden

Mums are an incredibly popular fall decoration, but they offer little support to North American wildlife. Since they’ve been cultivated for their showy double blooms, they produce little pollen or nectar. Also, as non-native plants, they did not co-evolve with our local ecosystems and do not serve as a host plant for our native butterflies and moths. Instead, consider planting native asters from the Symphyotrichum and Eurybia genera. These keystone species are powerhouse plants, serving as a host for dozens of butterfly and moth caterpillars and providing vital nectar for countless pollinators, including specialist bees. Be sure to select a species native to your specific region. Native asters deliver the same fall color as mums, and they return reliably year after year. They also pair incredibly well with our native goldenrods (Solidago). #asters #symphyotrichum #nativeplants #plants #native #nativeasters #mums #chrysanthemums #flowers #gardening #tips #keystoneplants #wildlife

A moment for these unreal asters 😍😍😍 Definitely not the easiest crop to grow and we may have totally fluked this, but very happy with our aster harvest today 🩷 these are the king size apple blossom 🌸 Asters are daylight sensitive and flower when the day length is jusssst right, so getting the timing right at seed sowing through to planting is crucial for success 🤞 #asters #flowers #nzgardening

Most native plants don’t bloom all season long, so it’s important to plant for spring, summer, and fall to support pollinators 🐝 Native asters are perfect for the fall, adding vibrant purples, pinks, as well as bright white flowers to your yard 🌸 What are some of your favorite fall blooming plants?⤵️ #myhomepark #fall #asters #fallgarden #nativeplants #pollinators #gardening #gardeningtips #gardendesign

A Fall Garden must 🙌 Mums get all the attention in Autumn but just imagine purchasing perennial Asters instead – you’d get more and more flowers every year without having to replace them 👏 Yes, Asters have smaller blossoms, but they make up for that by flowering in abundance! They have a gorgeous ethereal quality & don’t take up a lot of room. They’re so easy to sneak between other perennials in the middle or back of the border. With so many varieties that I can confidently say – there is an Aster for every condition imaginable. Even dry shade! The main star in this clip is White Wood Aster / Eurybia divaricate and it thrives in shady conditions. I planted it from a nursery grown plant ( yay for @connonnurseries) , but finding native is Asters in most nurseries is difficult. Luckily, many are super easy to grow from seed like I did the other two varieties shows – Flat top Aster / Doellingeria umbellate and Heath Aster/ Symphyotrichum erioides. I have others in my garden not shown too, like Smooth Aster / Symphyotrichum leave and Sky Blue Aster / Symphyotrichum oolentangiese. By planting several different varieties you’ll get a great show of flowers for 2-3 months, right at the end of the garden season - just when you need them Native Asters are also an essential food source for late season pollinators who are migrating or getting ready to hibernate. Birds like Goldfinches and Chickadees also enjoy the seeds! Asters for all 🌸 . . . #aster #asters #fallgarden #gardendesign #gardendesigner #nativegarden #gardenideas

We're back with NCBG research botanist Scott Ward getting into some nuanced distinctions between asters! 🌼🔬🤓 Last time, we talked about different flower forms in the aster family – the way some have only the central disk florets (like ironweed) and some have both disk and petal-like ray florets (like black-eyed Susans). This time, we're exploring some additional differences that can help you distinguish between the DYCs – "damn yellow composites" – the many asters with yellow ray florets. In some, like sunflowers (Helianthus), only the disk flowers produce seeds. In others, like rosinweeds (Silphium), only the *ray* flowers produce seeds. Pretty wild! In September and October all of the other flowers are done blooming. If you only plant flowers that bloom in the summer there’s no food left for monarch’s and bees in the fall months. Pollinators will be hangry and need a food source. Do you want to help them? Choose the New England aster over mums. It’s a plant native to New England and the Mid-Atlantic you can grow in your planters and add to your garden when the season is over. They’ll come back next year in zones 3-7! It gives monarchs fuel to continue their long migration south. Plus, you can’t beat purple florals with orange and green pumpkins. It’s the most colorful fall vibe! #fallgarden #nativeplants #asters #monarchs #homeandgarden
