Right before bed last night, JWST dropped this jaw-dropping pic: aurorae on Neptune! 🌌✨ For decades, we’ve seen auroras on Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus, but Neptune? Nothing. Until now! Thanks to JWST, we’ve finally seen Neptune’s bright aurorae, and it’s wild... they’re not at the poles but at mid-latitudes! 🌍 Why? Neptune’s magnetic field is tilted by 47 degrees! Did you see the auroras Friday night into Saturday morning? This solar storm was the largest in twenty years, and the auroras were at severe storm level all night long. Kp8-9 all night long. I had timelapses running all night long. This clip ran from around 2am until dawn. Pretty incredible to see all the different colors, and those colors reflecting off the snow! Uneventful events of the Sun ☀️ Coronal Mass Ejections or CMEs, are an eruption of around a billion tonnes of particles that comes from the solar atmosphere, the corona, and travels through the solar system. CMEs are an important part of ‘space weather’. The particles spark aurorae on planets with atmospheres, and can cause malfunctions in some technology.
