This task is a great way to check level of automaticity, awareness and control, and to get an idea of how writing holds up in a dual task condition that requires a higher cognitive load. Automaticity is our ability to do a task without thinking about it, because it has become habitual, we have mastered it to the degree that we do not have to allocate cognitive resources to it. Research has shown that the most effective way to improve handwriting is repetition and practice- to build automaticity. Kids who struggle with writing often have to dedicate cognitive resources to it because they are missing the skills that underpin writing (for example, proprioceptive processing, spatial awareness, grading of pressure, force, and speed, coordination, strength, visual motor integration, postural control, proximal stability, orthographic recall, and so on…). Then when they get into a dual task condition like note taking or writing tasks that require high language and spelling demands, the writing falls apart. They often give up.
