AWS IAM is one of those things every AWS user touches but very few actually understand properly. IAM stands for Identity and Access Management. It’s the system AWS uses to control who can do what inside your cloud account. Think of it like the security system for your entire AWS environment. Here’s the simple mental model 👇 Policies These are the permission rules. They define what actions are allowed or denied on AWS resources. Policies are written in JSON and attached to identities. Users A user usually represents a person or an application that needs direct access to AWS. Each user has credentials like a login password or access keys for the CLI or APIs. By default, new users have zero permissions until a policy is attached. Roles Roles provide temporary permissions. Instead of storing credentials, services like EC2 or Lambda can assume a role to access other AWS resources securely. The most important IAM principle is least privilege. Start with zero permissions and only add the access that is actually required. This simple idea prevents most AWS security mistakes.
