POCUS Tip: Short Axis View (Parasternal SAX) Quick, powerful, and essential! This view gives you a cross-sectional slice of the heart—perfect for assessing LV function, wall motion abnormalities, and even pericardial effusion. How to Get It: 1. Place the probe at the left 3rd–4th intercostal space, just lateral to the sternum. 2. Probe marker should point toward the patient’s left shoulder (10 o’clock position). 3. Rotate from the parasternal long axis to get the short axis. @dr_sidney_ortho- 🧠 IMAGING METHODS IN DIAGNOSTIC MEDICINE 👁️ Radiography (X-Ray) It uses ionizing radiation (energy that passes through tissues) to generate two-dimensional images based on the difference in density between body structures. 🔎 Best suited for: • fractures and bone changes • skeletal alignment • initial chest assessment • evident lung changes, such as pneumonia and pleural effusion (accumulation of fluid in the pleura). ⚠️ Limitations: Low resolution for soft tissue and overlapping structures. 🧬 Computed Tomography (CT) It also uses X-rays, but performs multiple cuts reconstructed by computer, forming high-resolution three-dimensional images. 🔎 Best suited for: • trauma and internal bleeding • pulmonary embolism (blockage by clots in the pulmonary arteries) • acute abdomen, such as appendicitis or pancreatitis • complex bone structures. ⚠️ Limitations: Greater radiation exposure and lower contrast for soft tissues compared to MRI. 🧲 Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) It uses a magnetic field and radiofrequency, without ionizing radiation, producing images with high contrast of soft tissues. 🔎 Best suited for: • brain and spinal cord • muscles, ligaments and joints • abdominal organs • cardiac and inflammatory assessment. ⚠️ Limitations: Higher cost, longer examination and restrictions on some metallic devices. 📊 Each method reveals a different dimension of human anatomy. . ⚠️🚨 Extreme Case: Cervical Instability at Its Worst The hospital initially reported that there was nothing wrong with the patient’s neck, including the C1 (atlas). Conventional imaging like X-ray, MRI, and CT scan showed no clear abnormality—because they only capture static images. However, using Digital Motion X-ray (DMX), real-time imaging under motion revealed severe upper cervical instability at C1, where the head was no longer being properly supported by normal ligamentous structures. Instead, it showed extreme instability and loss of structural support, consistent with significant ligamentous laxity. DMX made it possible to visualize what static imaging could not—the breakdown of ligament integrity and abnormal motion within the cervical spine.
