If you struggle and try shoving all of your items into your hiking pack, this video is for you. There are a lot of mistakes beginners can make when figuring out how to pack for a camping or hiking trip, but this is the one I most commonly see:�- Utensils and plates you don’t need to have a good meal�- Extra, extra, extra sets of clothes you don’t need to wear - Full cases of toiletries you won’t be able to finish. �These are incredibly important items to bring, but there are better ways to systemize them and to make them light enough for your trip. Remember: when it comes to packing, compact is best. If I had to restart backpacking from zero: After a lot of trips (and a lot of gear I wish I didn’t buy) Here’s what I’d do differently ⤵️ Lightweight tent: Your shelter is one of the heaviest things you carry, so it matters a lot. I’d spend the extra money here and get something truly lightweight. When you’re hiking miles in, every pound makes a difference 🏕️ A good inflatable sleeping pad (ideally with an easy inflate system) This is one of the biggest quality-of-life upgrades in backpacking. Blowing up the one I have is the worst thing on earth before going to bed. Save yourself the dizziness 😵‍💫 A solid 0° sleeping bag: If I could only own one bag, it would still be a 0°. You can always vent it or unzip it when it’s warmer, but when it’s cold you’ll be glad you have it. The one thing I’d change: I’d spend the extra money on a lighter one. My bag feels like carrying around a brick 🧱 Second hand titanium cookware: Titanium pots, cups, and utensils are ridiculously light and basically indestructible. I’d look for them used before buying new again. Outdoor gear holds up forever and people are always selling it. Steel and aluminum work, but the weight adds up fast. Plus you’re saving the planet 🌿🌲 A water filtration system you trust: Underestimated until you’re deep in the backcountry. A reliable filter means you don’t have to carry nearly as much water weight. ❗️Pro tip: a used Smartwater bottle threads onto many water filters and works way better than the bag provided IMO. Headlamp that takes batteries: You’ll use it constantly: cooking, setting up camp, late hikes, early mornings. Having one you don’t need to charge is way more convenient. Just don’t forget spares. Dry bags and compression sacks: Nothing ruins a trip faster than soaked gear (or not being able to fit everything back in your bag) A sit pad (so underrated): A tiny foam sit pad is one of the best comfort items you can bring. Dry place to sit, kneel while cooking, clean pants, can’t beat it. 3 items I actually ended up using on a 6 day backpacking trip 🏕️🥾 ASIDE from my normal day-to-day items and fun stuff of course 😋 ☔️Rain cover for pack- I always bring one (you should too!!!) and I’m glad I do because it poured on us the first day and a lot at nighttime! This cover is a littttttle too small for my pack and it’s really cold so it’s on my list to get a new one soon! 💧Water shoes for stream crossing - I got these for like $8 off amazon and they’re super lightweight and flexible, real easy to just throw in your pack! I wasn’t sure if I’d need them for river crossings but I did end up using them twice so I’m happy I had them! I also used them as camp shoes cus nothing feels better than taking off hiking shoes after an 11 mile day😅 🦶🏼Leuko tape for a blister - I always have this in my first aid, but I usually don’t have to use it cus I’m not very prone to blisters. But lo and behold, I got one and this tape saved the day 🎉 once it’s on it does NOT wanna come off! I changed it out every other day cus it grossed me out a bit but Leuko tape is super impressive! And of course, please make sure you bring all of the essentials and safety items when backpacking, especially long trips like this! 🥾 😘 #backpacking #backpackinggear #backpackinghacks #backpackingtips #montana
